Nguyen Thi Le Quyen is a student in class 11A2 at Lang Son Ethnic Minority High School. In the recent provincial-level gifted student exam, the female student brought home a score of 16.75, winning first prize in History.

Great moral support

Receiving the good news right before the New Year of the Snake 2025, the family meal of female student Nguyen Thi Le Quyen in Huu Lien commune (Huu Lung district, Lang Son province) was filled with laughter. This was the first year that the youngest daughter studying away from home suddenly announced her achievements in the provincial-level exam for gifted students. Before that, no one thought that the female student would achieve the highest result in her first attempt.

The female student's mother could not hide her joy when Quyen called home to inform her. According to Quyen, her mother was also the one who two years ago strongly supported her to study at the Provincial Ethnic Minority High School - a school with a long history of academic achievements.

“Encouraged by my mother, I entered the exam preparation process with a relaxed mindset, because it was an advanced exam, so the most important thing for me was to gain experience and prepare for the next school year. However, that did not mean I neglected my review,” Le Quyen said.

Registering to join the gifted student review team at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, according to Le Quyen, this is the perfect time after more than a year of getting used to the boarding environment, no longer feeling as bewildered as in grade 10. Now, the female student has great spiritual support from her family, close friends and teachers at school.

Studying at the same time as Quyen was her close friend, Nguyen Thi Ha Linh, who had just won third prize in the recent provincial-level gifted student exam. Both of them were classmates and were determined to do their best, so they shared many difficulties and hardships during the study process.

“We have been together since we first entered school, and we have encouraged each other to strive to shine, so we always accompany each other in all our studies and activities. Especially in our studies, Quyen and I often set small goals and work together to achieve them,” Ha Linh shared.

Before the assessment exam, the two female students spent time reinforcing their knowledge and practicing their analytical writing skills. During each self-study session in the afternoon or evening, Quyen and Linh made an appointment to go to the school library to ask and answer questions to reinforce their knowledge. In addition to the core content, Quyen focused on learning how to make strong arguments, focusing on linking history with modern social issues. Thanks to the great support of the school's Board of Directors, the two female students had a good environment and conditions for review, along with the dedication and enthusiasm of their teachers.

“For me, today's achievements not only come from self-study but also from the actions and hearts that people around me trust and devote to me, especially the care and encouragement of my parents and sister that have helped me become stronger,” Le Quyen shared.

Learning history is not just about events.

Having loved History since middle school, but because she was still afraid that her knowledge was not enough to compete with her peers, Le Quyen never participated in the school's gifted student team. However, her passion did not stop the young student from seeking knowledge. In addition to textbooks at all levels, she also searched for many other specialized documents to learn more.

Sharing about her interests, the female student said: “I have loved History for a long time, because it helps me understand the past, from which I can draw lessons for the present and the future. Curiosity about important events that have taken place urges me to constantly search and realize that history to me is not just theoretical pages on paper but also vivid stories about people, about the turning point decisions of the era.”

Currently, even though she just finished the Lunar New Year holiday, the female student still diligently starts studying every evening.

According to Le Quyen, the hardest thing before studying is to be determined to sit down at the table, then think about how to work in a disciplined and responsible manner. Every morning, the female student sets small goals for herself for the day and does not overwork. At the same time, in addition to practicing regularly to get used to the question format and know how to present the test more logically and coherently, the student also shares that the secret to getting a high score lies in using mind maps to systematize knowledge.

“It is necessary to divide historical periods according to cause-effect relationships to see events in an overview, making it easier to remember. Besides, I also study using the intermittent method, learning to understand to help solidify knowledge and not forget for a long time,” Quyen affirmed.
