Two special scholarships and two tear-jerking stories

The story of two new students Lo Thi Duy and Lo Thi Thao May - Performed by: VU TUAN - NGUYEN BAO - NHA CHAN - MAI HUYEN - TON VU

The audience was filled with tears when watching the reportage about the circumstances of two new students, Lo Thi Duy (a student at Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy) and Lo Thi Thao May (a student at Son La Medical College). The two new female students were slim, their skinny hands clasped tightly together as they sat in the exchange area.

Story 1: Tuoi Tre Newspaper brings new students back to work as factory workers at Thai Binh University of Medicine

Lo Thi Duy, from Nam Chua commune, Nam Po district, Dien Bien province, was admitted to Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy. The poor student from the border area thought she had reached her dream but had to put it aside.

Duy's uncle, Quang Van Do, borrowed 15 million VND for Duy to pay his tuition. The money was not enough, so after a few days of school, Duy decided to pay his uncle back and go to work as a factory worker to earn money to continue studying next year.

When a Tuoi Tre reporter was working on the program "Tiep suc den truong" (Helping Students Go to School), she met Duy, a freshman wearing a worker's uniform in an industrial park in Bac Ninh province.

Duy hopes that if she has enough money to pay tuition, she will be determined to go to school.

Tuoi Tre Newspaper contacted Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Fortunately for the poor but studious student, the school is still waiting for the day the student returns to school. Duy will enjoy tuition exemption and reduction, and accommodation support to continue to reach her dream.

Sitting shyly in the exchange area at today's scholarship ceremony, Duy burst into tears when mentioning his uncle's help.

Talking about his future dream, Duy said he will try to study well to become a good doctor, bringing knowledge and expertise to treat people and his often sick mother.

A surprise that made Duy sob was when the organizers invited her uncle who helped her to appear at the ceremony.

Seeing his uncle, Duy hugged him on stage. His uncle could not hold back his tears and kept wiping them away. Duy's uncle sent his thanks to Tuoi Tre, sponsors and benefactors for giving his nephew the opportunity to continue his dream.

Story 2: Abandoned by parents, poor adoptive mother, determined to go to school to change her life

Lo Thi Thao May has a particularly tragic situation, having been abandoned by her parents since she was a child and adopted by her mother, while her adoptive father died of cancer. Her three adopted brothers are in trouble with the law. All her fields were sold, and her adoptive mother had two cancer surgeries and is now unable to work. May herself is also disabled, with difficulty moving her right side.

But Lo Thi Thao May tried to study and passed the entrance exam to Son La Medical College.

May choked up and said that her adoptive mother was her biggest motivation to study, and encouraged her mother that only by studying could May change her life. May herself is not flexible, so her biggest wish is to have better health so that she can help her mother and take care of her mother in the future.

Raising a child without a father or mother, she cried when she heard her child received a scholarship.

Aunt and niece Khoang Thi Chon and Khoang Linh Chi rode their motorbikes more than 100 kilometers in the rain to the scholarship award ceremony for the "Tie Suc Den Truong" program.

Khoang Linh Chi is from Muong Lay town (Dien Bien). She has no father, and her mother died before she could be weaned. Her grandmother and aunt are also her second mothers. Aunt Chon said that on the day Chi received her university admission notice, the two of them hugged and cried. The family was poor and did not have enough money to send her to school, so Aunt Chon used the family's land title to borrow money from the bank to pay for Chi's tuition.

"Yesterday, when I received the news that my grandchild would receive a scholarship, my mother cried with joy. She didn't sleep all night. This morning, at nearly 6am, I kept telling her to take a nap. She received a scholarship, I'm so happy! Our family has less difficulty so she can continue to go to school" - Ms. Khoang Thi Chon said.

Wearing colorful traditional Mong ethnic costumes, from 4am, new student Mua A Nhenh (Phu Yen, Son La) and 4 friends studying at Son La College (Son La City) took a bus from school to Dien Bien Phu city to receive the scholarship.

"When I heard that I had received the scholarship to support the school, I was moved. The scholarship is a source of motivation for me to try harder. I am very grateful to Tuoi Tre newspaper and the sponsors for giving love to poor people like me," Nhenh confided.

Nhenh was born and raised in Suoi Thinh village (Suoi Bau commune, Phu Yen district) located on a high mountainside. The family's main source of income all year round depends on corn and cassava that his parents grow on the fields.

Life became even more difficult when her grandfather, who lived in the same house, suffered a stroke and became paralyzed in one arm. Her younger brother, who was in poor health, had to take a year off school to receive treatment.

Although his family circumstances were difficult, the desire to go to university was always in Nhenh's mind. With his will and determination, the young Mong man passed the entrance exam to Son La College.

Talking about his future dream, Nhenh hopes to become a singer, introducing the singing and culture of the Mong people to friends across the country.

Ca Thi Quynh Chau (born in 2006, student at Son La Medical College) and a friend rode a motorbike to Dien Bien Phu city to attend the program and receive the "Tiep suc den truong" scholarship.

Her family is poor and her father has severe gout. Chau said this scholarship is extremely meaningful to her.

"During the journey here, I was scared because it was my first time traveling so far. But my greatest happiness was having a scholarship to cover my tuition fees and save some to buy medicine for my father," Chau said, adding that it took her more than 6 hours to travel from Son La to Dien Bien Phu city.

Talking about her father who is suffering from a serious illness, the girl born in 2006 said she is trying hard to study and soon become a doctor to save people. "I will definitely overcome it, so that later when I see a sick person, I will always see him as my father suffering," Chau said.

On the afternoon of October 14, there was a heavy rain in Dien Bien, but it did not reduce the excitement and joy of the new students coming to receive their scholarships.

Nearly 100 students from 6 Northwestern provinces, each from a different hometown, but when they met, they were like close friends, chatting and getting to know each other.

Perhaps the new students, although they did not grow up together or go to the same school, share the same difficult circumstances and desire to succeed in life.

The whole audience fell silent when watching the report introducing the " Tiep suc den truong" scholarship and the circumstances of some poor new students who received the scholarship.

Tears filled the eyes of the students sitting in the auditorium. It seemed as if they saw their own circumstances as difficult as those of their friends in the video shown on the screen.

Journalist Nguyen Hoang Nguyen said that he chose Dien Bien today to support the new students from the 6 Northwestern provinces because this year is the brilliant milestone of the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory. Visiting the historical sites gave the students a lot of emotions.

Talking about the reason why the "Tiep suc den truong" scholarship has existed and developed over the years, Mr. Nguyen said that through this scholarship program, many beautiful stories have been discovered.

The book “Tiep suc den truong” has shown Tuoi Tre readers and people across the country many images of young but determined students. They may have different circumstances such as being orphaned by their father, mother or both parents, there are young students who are the pillars of their families… They have made endless efforts and strived, tirelessly searching for words to change their lives.

"These beautiful stories, when told to readers, have caused great emotion and impact in society over the past 21 years," said Mr. Nguyen.

Also according to journalist Hoang Nguyen, from these beautiful stories, beautiful hearts appear. Hearts that do not hesitate to silently campaign day and night to get scholarships for the children.

In his message to the students, Mr. Nguyen said that even though they have initial results in university, life has many temptations. If new students do not continue to practice and stay alert, they will lose their dreams. Tuoi Tre Newspaper does not expect students to return the scholarship, but to give opportunities so that society can have more useful people who live well and fewer people who are disoriented and useless. He hopes that students will live a life worthy of the help of society.

Mr. Vu Duy Hai said that since 2010, Vinacam Group has sponsored the program "Supporting children to school" in Dien Bien, which has been going on for 14 years. The Chairman of Vinacam Education Promotion Fund expressed his joy at seeing the economic life of the people in the Northwest increasingly improved.

Mr. Hai recalled the great contributions of the heroes and martyrs who fell on this land. More than 10,000 people died, the cemetery only gathered 2,000 martyrs but many martyrs were not identified by name. Every meter of A1 hill had the blood of many martyrs.

"Many heroes have fallen, their blood and bones have gone to the motherland and their souls have merged with the spirit of the country. We see that the children here have shown gratitude for the sacrifices of the heroes and martyrs," Mr. Hai shared.

The Chairman of Vinacam Group said that many people have saved every penny to contribute to the scholarship fund. The story of the silent donors who contributed money without leaving their names or addresses. The story of a deceased mother who left her children and grandchildren the funeral money and her savings for the scholarship fund.

Mr. Hai said that for every three students who receive scholarships here, one student receives savings from that mother. According to Mr. Hai, receiving a scholarship is not a free reward, but a special loan.

"This is a loan to you, but we do not expect you to pay us back with money, but with your knowledge to help the country. You are the borrowers and should pay us back with the knowledge you have accumulated for society," said Mr. Vu Duy Hai.

Speaking at the scholarship award ceremony, Mr. Vu A Bang recounted the story of Tuoi Tre newspaper organizing a scholarship award ceremony for poor students in Dien Bien in 2010. Among them, there was a special case of a female student named Mai who was orphaned. Even more painful was that when she was a child, Mai had an accident that crushed her right arm, leaving her with only a left arm. But Mai still overcame difficulties, was always an excellent student and passed the university entrance exam.

Mr. Bang said that every day, rain or shine, Mai still cycles 5km to school to learn. Not only that, Mai can also knit scarves and sweaters with her feet...

According to Mr. Bang, it was the Tiep Suc Den Truong scholarship that supported and accompanied Mai from the time she entered school until she graduated. And now she has become a lecturer at a school for children with disabilities.

Mr. Bang hopes that the new students receiving scholarships today will also try hard and become useful people for society like the little girl Mai in the story he told.

"New students should acknowledge and be grateful for the affection of sponsors, benefactors, and Tuoi Tre newspaper who traveled many kilometers to Dien Bien to present scholarships to the students. From there, let the students know that they are not alone on the path of learning."

Due to its specific characteristics, Dien Bien province has very difficult circumstances in socio-economic development, the poverty rate in 2024 is still high. He thanked the provinces and cities for sharing difficulties with Dien Bien.

The province has identified education and training as a key area of top concern. Tuoi Tre Newspaper has accompanied Dien Bien province for over 10 years in building infrastructure and transport facilities.
