Water withdrawal at the construction site of the 500 kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen transmission line project

In August, the hot weather and unpredictable rains seem to test the workers at the construction site. Mr. Ly Dinh Hieu - project supervisor of Song Da Construction and Service Joint Stock Company - one of the contractors of Package No. 1, Lao Cai - Vinh Yen 500 kV transmission line project told us to try to be at the Executive Board Office early to march to the foot of the pole.

From Highway 70, looking towards the hills next to it, it is easy to see the giant electric poles of the 500 kV line, but it takes nearly ten kilometers to move to the nearest pole.

As the fastest construction package on the entire route, since the start of construction, Package No. 1 has always been leading in the progress of completing important milestones from foundation pit construction to column erection. Mr. Hieu took us to the location of column VT05, where a construction team was starting to pull the first cables from the anchorage area of column VT05 to VT09.

It was only 8 o'clock but the sun was already scorching, the electric poles on the hilltop provided no shade, the workers and engineers worked diligently without much concern for the weather because for them, this hot weather was considered much more favorable than the recent stormy days.

The sound of the anchor locking machine and the winch roared loudly. To pull the wire through complex terrain areas and long anchor distances, the contractor used a flycam to spread the bait wire. This technique has been tested on many previous transmission projects and has now been used proficiently.

Mr. Nguyen Cao Ngoc, Deputy General Director of Song Da Construction and Service Joint Stock Company, said that using flycam to spread bait lines in the air helps shorten the time to spread and pull the lines, avoiding having to lower the lines many times, wasting time and prolonging progress.

“This method is very useful in difficult terrain conditions, where the route corridor has not been completely cleared; it helps to minimize the impact of cables on houses, trees, and crops under the route corridor,” said Mr. Nguyen Cao Ngoc.

On the burning electric pole, workers still hang on the rope to adjust the anchor chain and porcelain. At the foot of the pole, a worker operating the traction machine must always concentrate to maintain a stable pulling force, calculating to get the exact sag of the conductor according to the design, this is also a new modern equipment that the contractor has just brought to the construction site.

Mr. Hieu said that workers who work at height or operate tractors with brakes are all experienced people who have worked on many key projects. These techniques are very selective and not everyone can do them.

Around noon, the sun was at its highest point, the workers tried to finish their unfinished work and then dispersed to rest at the camp right at the foot of the electric pole. They quickly ate a bowl of rice, hung up their hammocks to rest under the shade of the trees so they could continue their work in the early afternoon.

Mr. Hieu shared: The company rented a house at the foot of the hill for the team to rest, but to save time traveling at noon, everyone took the opportunity to rest on the spot. The span from VT05 to VT09 is more than 2 km long, we are urging to speed up the progress to complete it in about 10 days, then we will continue to increase manpower to other spans.

According to the report from the Management Board of Package No. 1, up to this point, the wire pulling and laying work is being carried out simultaneously at many pole intervals, ensuring quality and progress as required.

These days, the image of giant electric poles being erected in the middle of the mountains and forests or on vast fields has become familiar. The sound of machines operating non-stop, the sound of welding, and the commands of engineers can be heard everywhere. Workers work under the harsh sunlight during the day and under the construction site lights at night, ensuring that not a single moment is wasted.

At package 2, the pole erection work is entering the final stage, the contractor has prepared the conditions to pull the wire as planned.

Mr. Nguyen The Hien, Commander, Power Construction One Member Co., Ltd. 4 shared that although the construction started 1 month after other packages, we are working hard to complete the construction. Up to now, we have completed the erection of construction poles at 28 locations. The remaining locations are being erected simultaneously, ensuring the wire pulling work according to the general plan of the entire line.

Everyone is working in a true sprint spirit. Every day, teams must report on their progress and plans for the next day. Any difficulties or problems are dealt with immediately so as not to affect the overall progress.

However, constructing a 500kV line through complex terrain such as high mountains, deep rivers and densely populated areas is not easy. The biggest difficulty at present is the erratic weather during the rainy season, making the transportation of materials and equipment difficult.

In addition, site clearance work at some locations is still facing difficulties, especially in densely populated areas or agricultural land. Contractors and local authorities are working closely to speed up the resolution process.

Mr. Dam Van Ngoc, a worker at Power Construction One Member Co., Ltd. 4, is one of the experienced workers mobilized from the construction site of the 500 kV Circuit 3 Project of Quang Trach - Pho Noi to come here and said: "The heat here is not as severe as in the Central region, but the erratic weather has greatly affected the organization of construction and ensuring the health of workers. However, the workers are determined to ensure the progress of the project."

The 500 kV Lao Cai - Vinh Yen transmission line project passes through 13 communes of Lao Cai province, with a length of about 139.66 km and 273 pole locations. According to the plan, the project must be energized on August 19, 2025 to promptly serve the high demand for electricity in the last months of the year. Currently, important items such as pole erection, wire pulling and transformer station installation are being accelerated.

With the efforts of the investor and contractor, it is hoped that the project will be completed on schedule, contributing significantly to improving power transmission capacity, meeting the socio -economic development needs of the region and the whole country.
