Bailey McBreen, 24, is a nurse living in Florida, USA. She used to have heartburn but it rarely happened. But in October 2022, she suddenly had heartburn continuously with unusual frequency. Every day, she could have heartburn from 5 to 10 times, according to the New York Post (USA).
Bailey McBreen had no idea that her months of heartburn was a sign of colon cancer.
About four months later, in February 2022, McBreen was diagnosed with acid reflux, a condition characterized by heartburn. She began to worry about her health, but her doctor reassured her that the condition was nothing to worry about.
But 11 months later, in January 2023, Ms. McBreen began to lose her appetite, experience severe abdominal pain and was unable to go to the bathroom. A CT scan revealed an unusual mass in her colon. Further tests revealed that she had stage 3 colon cancer.
In fact, constant heartburn is a warning sign of colon cancer. Not only that, she also had another unusual symptom: belching.
This is because the cancerous tumor is located higher up in the colon and partially blocks the intestine. Because food cannot pass through the intestine normally, it gets stuck, leading to symptoms of abdominal pain, loss of appetite, heartburn, belching and inability to go to the toilet.
Doctors surgically removed the tumor in January 2023. Ms. McBreen is currently undergoing chemotherapy until August 2023.
Colon cancer occurs when cancerous tumors form in the colon, interfering with the normal functioning of the bowel. The main symptoms of colon cancer are unexplained fatigue, weakness, rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, persistent gas, abdominal pain, diarrhea and constipation, according to the New York Post.
