Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing during a state visit to China on May 16.
This is Mr Putin's first foreign trip since he was sworn in for a fifth term as president earlier this month.
The leaders shook hands outside the Great Hall of the People on Tiananmen Square and listened to military bands playing the national anthems of both countries. They then posed for photos and left to begin talks.
According to Sputnik, Mr. Tap called Mr. Putin a good friend and congratulated him on his re-election to a fifth presidential term.
Xi said the relationship between Russia and China has withstood the test of a volatile international environment and become a benchmark for relations between major powers.
The Chinese leader said he has met Putin at least 40 times over the years. Xi said China wants to be a good neighbor, friend and trustworthy partner with Russia.
"This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia. Over the past three-quarters of a century, China-Russia relations have grown strong under difficult conditions, withstood the test of a volatile international situation, and today represent a benchmark in relations between major powers and neighboring countries, characterized by mutual respect, trust, friendship and mutual benefit," Xi said.
Meanwhile, President Putin affirmed that the warm relationship between Russia and China is not a threat to any other country.
He said that cooperation between Russia and China on world issues helps create stability on the international stage. "Together, we defend the principles of justice and the democratic world order based on multipolar reality and international law," Putin said.
The Russian President said that trade turnover between Russia and China increased in 2023 and reached 227 billion USD. Russia and China have carried out practical cooperation activities. China is Russia's main partner in the economic and trade fields.
Mr Putin added that energy, industry and agriculture are priorities in bilateral cooperation. The Russian president also noted the importance of cooperation in high technology, innovation, infrastructure construction and transport .
During his visit, the Russian President was accompanied by a large delegation, including five deputy prime ministers, heads of economic, diplomatic and security agencies, as well as the heads of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, Russian Railways, Rosatom and Roscosmos. In addition, senior officials from 20 Russian regions also accompanied the President on his visit to China.
The second stage of President Putin's state visit to China will take place in Harbin, the capital and largest city of Heilongjiang Province. There, Putin will attend the opening ceremony of the 8th Russia-China Expo and the 4th Russia-China Forum on Interregional Cooperation, and will meet with students and teachers of the Harbin Institute of Technology. In addition, President Putin is expected to hold talks with Kremlin journalists.
