“I believe that a vote for me and what I stand for is a vote of confidence in Singapore itself, a vote of optimism about how we can progress together and support each other as Singaporeans,” Mr Tharman said on Facebook after the final results were announced.

“I did not expect such a high level of support,” he said in another interview. Describing the result as “remarkable unity” from Singaporeans, Mr Tharman said he thought people were “very rational in the way they voted”.

Mr Tharman also said he was looking forward to meeting incumbent President Halimah Yacob and seeking her advice. "She has served Singapore well. I admire her calmness, poise and dignity as President," he said.

"One of the first things I want to do is sit down with her and listen to her thoughts and advice after six years in this position. I am very serious about wanting to fulfill the mission that the people have given me," he added.
