Donald Trump said resolving the Ukraine crisis would be his top priority after taking office in January 2025, while calling the situation in the Middle East "less difficult".
"I think we have to solve the Ukraine problem with Russia," the US president-elect told French magazine Paris Match .
"Both of those countries are losing lives that nobody would believe. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers are dying," Mr. Trump said, responding to a question about his top priorities on the international stage.
"And the Middle East is of course a big priority. But I think the Middle East situation is less difficult than the Russia-Ukraine war. But those are two issues that we have to solve very quickly. A lot of people are dying," he stressed.
Last week, Mr. Trump traveled to Paris to attend the December 7 reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, which was destroyed by a fire in 2019. He met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the trip, his first international trip since his re-election in November.
"We had a good meeting with President Zelensky," Trump said.
On December 10, Mr. Zelensky said Mr. Trump had a “strong determination” to end the war in Ukraine.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly claimed that he could end the conflict in Ukraine within 24 hours.
On December 8, he wrote on the social network Truth Social that "there needs to be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin in Ukraine."
He also stressed that the US would not intervene in Syria, where the government of President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown by opposition forces in a lightning offensive over the weekend.
"Syria will have to take care of itself. We are not involved in Syria," he declared.
