OpenAI launches ChatGPT Atlas, will it overwhelm Google Chrome?

According to Techcrunch , OpenAI has just launched the ChatGPT Atlas web browser, marking a big step forward in its ambition to change the way people search and use information on the Internet, an area that has been dominated by Google for many years.

In recent times, web browsers have become the new race of the AI ​​industry. While Google Chrome is still the leading name, the emergence of AI assistants is gradually changing the way people work and search for information online.

Many startups like Perplexity (with the Comet browser) or The Browser Company (with Dia) are also racing to develop similar smart browsers.

Both Google and Microsoft have also integrated AI into Chrome and Edge to refresh their products.

ChatGPT Atlas is currently only available on MacOS

ChatGPT will be at the heart of the new browser, says Atlas Engineering Lead Ben Goodger, allowing users to chat directly with search results, similar to what Perplexity and Google AI Mode do.

One of the standout features of AI-integrated browsers today is the “sidecar” – a chat box located next to the web page that can understand and interact with the content being displayed. This helps users avoid having to manually copy, paste, or drag content into ChatGPT to ask questions.

Adam Fry, Head of Product at OpenAI, confirmed that ChatGPT Atlas also has this sidecar feature. Additionally, the browser remembers browsing history, helping ChatGPT understand user habits and better personalize responses.

Like its competitors, ChatGPT Atlas also has an "agent mode" – which allows users to ask ChatGPT to perform some small operations directly on the browser.

However, this feature is only available to paid users (Plus, Pro and Business plans) in the initial stage.

At the DevDay event, Nick Turley, Director of ChatGPT, said he was inspired by how web browsers completely changed the concept of operating systems.

According to him, ChatGPT and AI browsers can bring about a similar shift, where people work, search and create content right within the chat interface with AI.

According to records, many Vietnamese users have started experiencing ChatGPT Atlas.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, an office worker in Ho Chi Minh City, said he tried Atlas and was quite impressed. "I didn't have to do anything but I already had a smart assistant to support me. Chrome will have to worry about this time" - he commented.

Some other users, like Mr. Nguyen Van Long (living in Ho Chi Minh City), expressed concern: "I don't know if AI browsers like this are safe. I'm not familiar with technology, I'm just a normal user, so I'm a bit worried about data security."

However, observers say it is still difficult to predict whether ChatGPT Atlas can compete with Google Chrome - a browser with more than 3 billion users worldwide.
