Petrovietnam seeks new driving force for digital transformation and energy transition
With the goal of becoming a national energy industry group in the spirit of Conclusion No. 76, Petrovietnam is striving to regenerate human resources to successfully transform digitally and transition energy.
At the seminar "The role of political organizations of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group in digital transformation and energy transition in the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group" on the morning of December 14 in Vung Tau City, Mr. Tran Quang Dung, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Petrovietnam Party Committee, said that as an energy industry group and a pillar of the economy, Petrovietnam is striving to renew traditional driving forces and create new driving forces related to renewable energy in the spirit of Conclusion No. 76-KL/TW (KL76) dated April 24, 2024 of the Politburo on strategic orientations for the development of the Vietnam Oil and Gas industry to 2025, with a vision to 2035.
With the goal of becoming a national energy industry group in the spirit of Conclusion No. 76, Petrovietnam is striving to regenerate human resources to successfully transform digitally and transition energy; in which, units throughout Petrovietnam continue to focus on improving the quality of human resource training to meet this transformation roadmap.

Currently, Petrovietnam has made a huge change in digital transformation and energy transition throughout the group, especially in member units such as Vietsovpetro, Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company; in which, Petroleum Technical Services Corporation ( PTSC ) since March 2023 has won the bid to design and construct 33 offshore wind turbine bases with a contract value of over 2 billion USD.
Mr. Ngo Manh Thang, Deputy Director of the Offshore Wind Turbine Base Project for the Changhua Offshore Wind Farm in Taiwan (China), said that PTSC has signed a contract to manufacture 33 offshore wind turbine bases for its partner Orsted (Denmark) and has completed 24 bases. The handover is scheduled to be completed in June 2025.
PTSC has also signed a contract for 10 AC transformer stations for offshore wind power projects. In addition, PTSC is also implementing a wind power export project to Singapore, which is currently in the offshore survey phase.
Since signing the first contract with Orsted on May 19, 2023 to December 1, 2024, the value of contracts in this field that PTSC has signed has reached over 2 billion USD, creating jobs for more than 3,000 PTSC employees and nearly 100 subcontractors in nearly 2 years.
To implement these large projects, PTSC has built a system of partners and subcontractors in the offshore wind power supply chain to ensure the most effective use of facilities, people and technology of all parties.
However, PTSC also said that because offshore wind power is a relatively new type of energy in Vietnam, the implementation of offshore wind power projects in general is facing many challenges, especially in terms of technology and techniques; resources and capacity.
Offshore wind power projects in general in Vietnam still face legal and policy barriers such as an incomplete legal framework, support policies that need further development, a faster licensing process, and detailed guidance on the revised Electricity Law. |
From the perspective of digital transformation, Mr. Hoang Canh Son, representative of Vietsovpetro, said that digital transformation in oil and gas exploration and exploitation in Vietnam still faces many challenges when the application of technologies is still fragmented, lacking connectivity, and little popularization and experience exchange. In addition, specialized databases are small and local; serving each narrow field, difficult to integrate.
There are also common national barriers such as telecommunications infrastructure, data protection, cybersecurity, environment and legal corridors that affect the digital transformation roadmap in the field of oil and gas exploration and exploitation.
To overcome these challenges, Vietsovpetro has built the Digital Transformation Strategy 2025-2030; which aims to comprehensively digitize production activities on digital platforms; optimize operational management activities on the basis of making the most of current digital platforms and infrastructure; and innovate effective business models through digital capabilities.
According to Mr. Hoang Canh Son, this digital transformation aims to help Vietsovpetro maintain a stable oil and gas production output at an average of 2.8 million tons/year, while expanding its business model, ensuring an increase in the contribution ratio of other business segments besides oil and gas exploitation, including oil and gas services, offshore wind power investment, offshore wind power services (reaching 15% by the end of 2025, 30% by the end of 2030 and 60% by the end of 2035).
Currently, Vietsovpetro is implementing 4 digital initiatives in production and business activities, including: Applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to automate work in oil and gas exploration and exploitation; Integrated maintenance and repair system on offshore structures to control and manage maintenance and repair activities of equipment on offshore structures, control the use of materials, equipment and maintenance and repair personnel, control the status of machinery and equipment, damage, digitize maintenance and repair management processes, save time for processing paperwork; upgrade the ERP enterprise management system and build and perfect related management operations; digital initiative of Electronic Medical Records.
Speaking at the seminar, Mr. Pham Quang Dung, Chairman of the Petrovietnam Veterans Association, affirmed that digital transformation and energy transition are objective inevitabilities in the era of Industry 4.0. Petrovietnam in general and political organizations in the group in particular are not outside of that trend and responsibility.
With the fact that digital transformation and energy transition are deeply impacting the production and business strategy and directly affecting the quality of oil and gas exploitation of Petrovietnam, raising awareness and action of each collective and individual in Petrovietnam and the participation of political organizations in the group in the spirit of "one team, one goal" is really important to realize this transformation roadmap and become a national energy industry group in the spirit of No. 76-KL/TW (KL76) dated April 24, 2024 of the Politburo.
