Finnish researchers develop device that improves cancer tumor removal rates and reduces the need for local re-surgery. (Source: Marginum Ltd) |
On March 23, the University of Eastern Finland announced that the tissue suction monitor product was developed by the startup Marginum based on interdisciplinary research conducted by the University of Eastern Finland, the Department of Neurosurgery at Kuopio University Hospital, and the Microsurgery Center of Eastern Finland.
Kuopio University Hospital has conducted the first clinical trial of this device.
During testing, the researchers attached the device to a surgical suction tube and identified tumor tissue based on fluorescence.
Surgeons will receive near real-time information about cancerous tissue cells, thereby removing cancerous tissue from the human body.
The introduction of this device will improve tumor removal rates and reduce the need for local re-operation, in addition to saving costs and providing better outcomes for cancer patients.
Antti-Pekka Elomaa, associate professor of experimental neurosurgery and chairman of the board of Marginum, expressed his hope that in the near future, the technique of monitoring cancerous tissue could be improved to become the "gold standard" for developing surgical methods using fluorescence.
