Finland builds first section of fence on border with Russia. (Source: AFP) |
In Europe, the first section of the fence is 3km long in the area near the Imatra border gate, southeastern Finland.
The fence that Finland is building on the border with Russia is expected to be 200km long, 3m high and topped with barbed wire. It is estimated that this project will be completed in 2026, with a construction cost of about 380 million Euros.
Until the construction of this project, the Finnish-Russian border was marked only by a low wire fence that prevented the movement of livestock and other farm animals, but not people.
About 70% of the fence will be built in southeastern Finland, with shorter sections planned in central and largely uninhabited Arctic Lapland.
