Mammography is a recognized means of early screening for breast cancer in people who do not yet have symptoms.
Benign breast tumors
Ms. NTH (43 years old, Da Nang ) went to Thien Nhan Da Nang for a 3D mammogram because she suspected a tumor in her left breast during a routine health check-up organized by the company. It is known that 3 years ago, Ms. H. had a breast ultrasound and discovered a benign lesion in her right breast, and cysts on both sides, so she was recommended to monitor and have regular check-ups. Ms. H. herself is not married, has no children, has no symptoms in her breasts, and has no family history of breast cancer or breast diseases.
At Thien Nhan Da Nang, Ms. H. was given a mammogram using a 3D X-ray machine (Mammomat Inspiration), the results showed many abnormalities in the structure and morphology of suspected cancer in both breasts. When taking an MRI of the breast, it was clear that there were suspicious multifocal tumors on both sides of the breast with strong absorption properties, not yet invading neighboring structures and organs. The core biopsy results of the tumors in both breasts were all malignant. Immediately after that, Ms. H. was advised to receive specialist treatment.
Similarly, Ms. HTK (57 years old, Da Nang) was also diagnosed with a benign tumor in her left breast before and was monitored... Until Ms. K. went to Thien Nhan for a mammogram, it was discovered that most of the breast tissue had dense calcifications in polymorphic, branched, and thin line shapes with structural disturbances that were suspicious of cancer. The biopsy result was ductal carcinoma of the breast.
Breast cancer screening is a way for women to proactively save themselves.
Dr. Pham Thi Diem Thuy - Da Nang Thien Nhan Breast Center said that the above cases are not rare. Many cases are diagnosed with breast cancer when they have not shown any clinical signs. "In the 2 months of using the 3D digital mammography system, Da Nang Thien Nhan Breast Center has performed nearly 300 scans, of which dozens of cases of breast cancer were detected. Most of the patients are 40 years old or older, accidentally discovering breast cancer during routine health check-ups".
According to Dr. Thuy, in reality, clinical examination and ultrasound are very difficult to detect microcalcifications - which are calcium deposits, very diverse in shape, size, quantity and distribution in the mammary glands. In some cases, microcalcifications are a sign of cancer in the early stages and mammography is an absolutely superior means compared to ultrasound and MRI in detecting, evaluating and classifying microcalcification lesions for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. In addition, mammography also helps guide biopsies to determine the nature of the lesions.
With more than 10 years of experience in the field of breast cancer treatment, Dr. Pham Thanh Hai - Professional Consultant of Thien Nhan Breast Center in Da Nang said: "Women over 40 years old who screen for breast cancer by annual mammography reduce the mortality rate from breast cancer by 40% compared to the group that does not screen. Mammography helps detect breast cancer very early, even before there are clinical symptoms".
Breast cancer patients diagnosed at an early stage will have good results in terms of both cancer pathology and aesthetics, and the cost of treatment is also much lower than in the late stage. The risk of breast cancer damage due to radiation during mammography is extremely low, so do not refuse to have a mammogram because of fear of pain or radiation exposure - Dr. Pham Thanh Hai emphasized.
