In the period of 2021-2025, the province has issued many policies, resolutions and plans to develop sustainable coffee production, processing and consumption. The focus is on replanting, grafting and renovating old gardens, improving productivity and quality; building raw material areas associated with processing and environmental protection; applying high technology, developing agroforestry models, intercropping fruit trees to improve soil and meet export standards. At the same time, the province focuses on developing specialty and organic coffee and producing according to international standards, helping Son La coffee affirm its position in the global market, enhance the value of geographical indications and improve people's lives.
Over the past 5 years, Son La has replanted, rejuvenated and grafted 2,818 hectares of coffee, and put into production new Arabica varieties such as TH1, TN7, TN9 and testing H1, Starmaya with high productivity, quality, and suitable for local conditions. Thanks to that, the province has become the locality with the largest Arabica coffee area in the country. By 2025, the total coffee area of the province will reach 24,300 hectares, an increase of 5,448 hectares; the output will be more than 37,700 tons, an increase of nearly 11,000 tons compared to 2021. The whole province has 1,120 hectares of specialty coffee, 23,448 hectares of internationally certified sustainability (4C, RA), along with many VietGAP and organic models being replicated, attracting 1,560 households to participate in 2 high-tech growing areas. Thanks to that, Son La coffee brand is increasingly affirmed, the product has been granted geographical indication protection and has 5 OCOP products, of which one product meets 5-star standards.
Along with that, Son La coffee processing industry is developing strongly with 5 industrial-scale facilities and more than 15 preliminary processing facilities, meeting over 50% of fresh fruit processing demand. Facilities invest in modern waste treatment systems, utilize by-products to produce organic fertilizers, demonstrating a commitment to environmental protection. In the first 6 months of 2025, the whole province exported 17,800 tons of coffee beans, worth nearly 70 million USD, an increase of 29.8% over the same period in 2024, mainly exported to the EU, North America, the United States, the Middle East and ASEAN markets, affirming the position of Son La coffee in the international market.
Ms. Cam Thi Phong, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: Implementing Conclusion 863-KL/TU of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee on high-tech coffee development, from 2023 to now, the province has basically achieved and exceeded the set goals. The area of specialty coffee, high-quality growing areas and areas with sustainable certification have all increased sharply, contributing to improving productivity, product value, boosting exports and affirming the position of Son La coffee.
The goal by 2030 is to have 25,000 hectares of coffee in the whole province, with an output of 40,000 tons/year. The province continues to direct the replanting of 9,800 hectares of old gardens, the development of 5,950 hectares of specialty coffee, the construction of 18,000 hectares of sustainable raw material areas and at least 5 high-tech application areas. Increase the rate of production meeting international standards (4C, RA) to 70-80%, industrial processing over 80%, deep processing from 20-25% and export 80-85%, of which deep-processed products account for 20-25%... towards the development of a sustainable, modern and high-value coffee industry, meeting the requirements of the export market.
