(HNMO) - On May 10, according to news from the Vietnam - Germany Friendship Hospital, they successfully performed surgery on a female patient with a giant tumor in her face as big as a second head.
The patient is Ms. NTP (40 years old, from Thai Binh ). Ms. P was born into a poor family and all 3 siblings suffered from an incurable disease with tumors all over their bodies. Ms. P alone had a tumor right on her face. Due to lack of money for treatment, she had to live with the tumor for many years and the tumor grew larger and larger.
Over time, Ms. P's nose and upper lip became more than 10 times larger. More than half of the patient's face developed into a tumor as large as the rest of her head. The entire eyeball and eye socket of the female patient were pushed out... Until the day the tumor grew rapidly, was swollen, painful, and tense as if it was about to burst, Ms. P was taken for treatment.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha, Head of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery - Plastic Surgery - Aesthetics (Viet - Duc Friendship Hospital) said that through examination and imaging, the patient was diagnosed with a giant neurofibroma in the left side of the head and face. The congenital tumor, in addition to growing outward, also destroyed a large part of the sphenoid bone of the skull and eye socket. A large part of the tumor grew outward from the brain, causing the eyeball to fall out of the eye socket.
Faced with this difficult case, the hospital had to come up with a meticulous surgical plan to ensure maximum safety for the patient. In the first surgery, maxillofacial surgeons will have to calculate to be able to remove 70-80% of the tumor without losing too much blood. Next, neurosurgeons will have to separate the tumor from the brain tissue...
The surgery lasted for 8 hours with many techniques to stop the bleeding. Dr. Dao Van Giang, Deputy Head of the Department of Maxillofacial - Plastic - Cosmetic Surgery (Viet - Duc Friendship Hospital) said that after more than 2 weeks of active post-operative care, Ms. P was able to eat, sit up, and walk lightly on her own.
Most of the tumor has been removed, Ms. P feels like a burden has been lifted from her face and she is able to return to a normal life. The wound is being cared for and bandaged, waiting for it to heal before surgery can be performed on the remaining lips and nose.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha added that neurofibromatosis is a disease caused by mutations and changes in the gene structure on chromosome 17. The disease manifests itself in many forms on the body. There are patients with hundreds of tumors like warts all over their bodies, while others have giant tumors like bear paws, elephant legs, horse mane necks, giant turtle shell backs, etc.
Doctors recommend that patients who are unfortunate enough to have the disease should seek medical attention early because surgery will be simpler and less dangerous. More importantly, if not treated early, large tumors can rupture at home, causing death, or some tumors can turn malignant, which will be very difficult to treat.
