Farmers in Toc Tien commune, Phu My city, are taking care of their flock of chickens. |
High risk of disease outbreak
Previously, Mr. Nguyen Cong Tai (Hoa Hung commune, Xuyen Moc district) only disinfected his pig pen (50 pigs) once every two weeks, but now he has to increase the frequency to once a week. He also strictly adheres to the veterinary agency's recommendations for vaccinating his livestock against diseases.
“At this time of year, the weather is hot and sunny, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks, so ensuring the safety of the pig herd is our top priority. My family regularly inspects and repairs the pigpens, preventing dampness that creates conditions for pathogens to develop; we pay close attention to cleaning feed troughs, water troughs, and farming equipment. We carry out regular disinfection and sterilization. We enhance care, providing clean feed and water to ensure the animals grow well and stay healthy. I also restrict access to the pigpens by strangers,” Mr. Tai said.
As a large-scale poultry farmer with over 2,000 free-range chickens, Mr. Nguyen Minh Ly's family (Toc Tien commune, Phu My city) pays special attention to disease prevention and control for their flock. Mr. Nguyen Minh Ly stated that with the current transitional weather and hot temperatures, his chickens are very susceptible to disease outbreaks. Therefore, during the farming process, he regularly sprays disinfectant around the chicken coop to minimize the spread of pathogens.
He also ensures that the chickens are vaccinated on schedule and with the correct dosage; regularly monitors the health of the flock, and detects sick chickens early so that they can be isolated and treated.
Strengthening disease prevention and control
According to statistics from the Provincial Department of Livestock and Crop Production, the province currently has a total pig population of 414,000, an increase of 3.5% compared to the same period last year; a total poultry population of 6.97 million, an increase of 3.2%; a total cattle and buffalo population of 57,633, an increase of 3.7%; and a total goat and sheep population of 101,000, an increase of 3.9%. To ensure effective disease prevention and control for livestock and poultry, relevant agencies are intensifying propaganda and guidance for livestock farmers in the area, emphasizing hygiene in barns, disinfection, and proactive vaccination of livestock and poultry.
The Provincial Department of Livestock and Crop Production has strengthened epidemiological management, controlled animal slaughter, and closely monitored the disease situation to take timely remedial measures; it has also implemented environmental disinfection and sterilization to prevent and control animal diseases. The Department also coordinated with localities to guide people in implementing biosafety measures in livestock farming, and implemented a comprehensive set of technical and veterinary hygiene measures to prevent and limit the spread of pathogens.
Mr. Phan Van Trai, Head of the Livestock and Veterinary Department of the Provincial Livestock and Crop Production Sub-Department, stated that, to date, no outbreaks of livestock or poultry diseases have occurred in the province. However, given the complex situation of animal diseases nationwide, the Provincial People's Committee has requested the Department of Agriculture and Environment to urgently review the total number of livestock eligible for vaccination and organize vaccination campaigns. Particular attention should be paid to livestock in high-risk areas, and livestock that have been vaccinated but whose immunity has expired or is about to expire; to implement the first phase of mass vaccination in 2025; and to review booster and supplementary vaccinations, ensuring that at least 80% of the livestock population receives the correct and sufficient vaccines.
The Provincial People's Committee also requested localities to proactively strengthen the management of quarantine and transportation of animals and animal products; strengthen inspection, supervision, detection and strict handling of cases of trading, transporting and slaughtering animals that do not meet the requirements for disease prevention and control and food safety.
