In Phu Loi commune (Dinh Quan district), a linkage model for durian trees following VietGAP is being developed, contributing to increasing the value of local agricultural products, as well as bringing a stable source of income to farmers.
Focus on growing durian according to VietGAP
Durian is one of the fruits with high economic value, favored by domestic and international consumers. Grasping the market trend, in 2018, Mr. Nguyen Van Hanh's family (residing in Hamlet 5, Phu Loi Commune) boldly planted 1 hectare of Thai durian, then expanded the area of this crop every year. To date, his family has nearly 5 hectares of Thai and Ri6 durian, of which 3 hectares are for harvest.
Being a studious person, Mr. Hanh has researched and participated in training courses on sustainable durian cultivation, applied planting techniques according to VietGAP standards and registered growing area codes. At the same time, he also participated in a production linkage model to meet export standards and expand the consumption market.
In 2024, durian prices will increase, and Mr. Hanh's family's profit will reach about 900 million VND/hectare. This year, his garden will not reach peak harvest time for more than a month. Currently, the whole family is focusing on taking care of, fertilizing, and tying the fruit to prevent the durian from breaking or falling when it rains or experiences storms at the beginning of the season.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hanh shared that growing durian according to VietGAP standards requires compliance with standards, especially the use of pesticides and fertilizers in the correct dosage and with clear licenses from the authorities. Meeting VietGAP standards will help durian connect with many domestic and export markets and have more stable consumption.
Like Mr. Nguyen Van Hanh, about 5 years ago, Mr. Tran Khi Sau (residing in Phu Loi commune) converted his family's coffee and pepper growing area to durian growing. Currently, Mr. Sau's garden has many durian varieties such as: Ri6, Musaking... Mr. Sau works, learns knowledge, and accumulates experience to take care of and develop the durian growing area.
Mr. Tran Khi Sau said: “Durian is a “difficult” crop, but in return, it brings in much higher income than traditional long-term crops such as cashew, coffee, pepper, etc. The most important thing to note for durian trees is that when pollinating, you need to calculate the amount of water and water on the right day. Once pollination is complete, then gradually increase the amount of water so that the fruit will set beautifully. When the fruit is large, it is necessary to limit the situation where the fruit falls before maturity, because it will reduce productivity and economic efficiency.”
Vice Chairman of Phu Loi Commune People's Committee NGUYEN CONG QUAN said that in the future, the commune will continue to mobilize farmers and households adjacent to durian gardens to establish a chain of linkages to improve economic efficiency and quality of durian trees, gradually developing stable durian products in the locality.
Building a chain of links, improving crop efficiency
In recent years, the area of durian in Dinh Quan district in particular has increased rapidly due to the economic value that this crop brings. If in 2020, the whole district had less than 865 hectares, then up to now the area of durian has reached nearly 2.9 hectares, of which more than 1.9 thousand hectares are for products.
The economic efficiency of durian trees is clear, but the rapid expansion of acreage is posing many problems in the sustainable development of this crop.
According to the People's Committee of Dinh Quan district, the district has implemented production and consumption chains for agricultural products in the area, including the durian chain in Phu Loi commune.
Vice Chairman of Phu Loi Commune People's Committee Nguyen Cong Quan shared that the commune is developing a large area of durian trees. The commune identifies durian as one of the key crops to develop and increase the value of local agricultural products. Currently, through propaganda and support for farmers according to the district's Agricultural Development Project for this crop, in the past 3 years, the whole commune has developed 347 hectares of durian in association with enterprises such as An Loc Phat, Tan Hoang Linh... Up to now, 17 households with 30 hectares of durian have been granted growing area codes. Of which, 5 households have been put into production according to VietGAP standards with an area of 12.4 hectares. The remaining 30 households with 60 hectares have linked up in production and established an agricultural cooperative specializing in durian trees.
Mr. Tran Khi Sau expressed that the economic efficiency of durian trees still depends on the export market, so the price still fluctuates, depending on different times. Therefore, he wants to expand market connections, find stable output, hoping for "good season, good price" for local durian products, especially when the market has been fluctuating a lot recently.
