In 2023, Phu Trung commune was selected by the Provincial People's Committee to achieve the New Rural Area (NRA) status. Despite having a low starting point, Phu Trung has achieved positive results through its concerted efforts. The commune has mobilized resources to upgrade and pave over 117km of village, inter-village, alley, and field roads with asphalt and concrete. Notably, the commune's People's Committee headquarters and health station have been newly constructed; the school system has also been upgraded with multi-story buildings at a cost exceeding 24 billion VND, contributing to improved educational quality and ensuring that 100% of schools in the area meet national standards at Level I. Simultaneously, programs and projects supporting poor households and ethnic minority households have proven effective, resulting in a gradual reduction in the number of poor and near-poor households and an increase in the number of well-off and wealthy households.

Phu Trung is the 10th and also the last commune in Phu Rieng district to achieve the New Rural Area standard.
