Liverpool's last-minute brilliance helped them take all 3 points against Bournemouth

(Dan Tri) - Liverpool started their journey to defend their Premier League title with a dramatic 4-2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield in the early morning of August 16.

Liverpool had a good start with a two-goal lead after 50 minutes, but The Kop let the opponent equalize in the 76th minute. Luck smiled on Arne Slot's team when they sublimated in the final minutes of the match to score two more goals, thereby winning all 3 points in the opening round, at the same time extending Bournemouth's losing streak at Anfield to 7.

The atmosphere at Anfield was heightened by a rousing rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone, along with tributes to Diogo Jota and Andre Silva. After a moment's silence, Arne Slot's Premier League champions, featuring four debutants, got into the game at full speed. Mohamed Salah had an early powerful shot saved by Dorde Petrovic, before the Egyptian set up Virgil van Dijk to head over the bar.

The first refereeing controversy of the season erupted in the 12th minute when coach Slot was furious at a clear handball by Marcos Senesi as Ekitike raced forward. However, the Frenchman was not to be denied in the 37th minute, as he broke the deadlock after Alexis Mac Allister’s pass, with a bit of luck from Senesi’s touch, before finishing past Petrovic with precision. Ekitike almost had a second just minutes later, sending Slot’s side into the break with a slim advantage.

Just five minutes into the second half, Ekitike continued to shine with an assist for Gakpo. The Dutch striker moved into the middle with great force and calmly finished past Petrovic to make it 2-0.

Liverpool looked set for a goal-scoring storm, but Petrovic tipped Mac Allister's shot over the bar. Just when Liverpool seemed to have the game under control, Antoine Semenyo pulled Bournemouth back after a powerful attack in the 64th minute. Tyler Adams fed David Brooks on the left, and Brooks' superb pass was converted by the Ghanaian to make it 1-2.

Semenyo then scored his second goal, both for himself and Bournemouth, to stun Anfield. The strike exposed Liverpool’s defensive weaknesses, which had been evident throughout pre-season. The striker was given permission to run into the box, exploiting the space between Ibrahima Konate and Van Dijk before firing past Alisson in the 76th minute.

Semenyo became the first visiting player to score a brace at Anfield since September 2022. However, the defending champions eventually won through an unlikely source. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola was left shocked by a poor defensive display from his side, with Federico Chiesa pouncing on a loose ball in the box and firing home in front of the Kop for his first Premier League goal in the 88th minute.

In a sleepless night, the visitors' defence left goalkeeper Petrovic to fend off the home side's strikers. And the fourth goal finally came for Liverpool when Salah dribbled freely inside the penalty area in the fourth minute of stoppage time before finishing diagonally to score. This was Salah's 10th goal in the opening rounds of the Premier League.
