Pogba is about to join Monaco. |
ESPN reports that Monaco is close to finalizing the paperwork to sign Pogba on a free transfer this summer. Both sides have agreed on a two-year contract. For the first time in his career, the midfielder, born in 1993, will play in Ligue 1.
Previously, Pogba had received numerous offers to play in the MLS and Saudi Pro League, but he declined them. The former Manchester United star wanted to maintain his top-level football skills so he could return to play for the French national team at the 2026 World Cup.
Pogba once shared with ESPN that he considered retirement after receiving a four-year ban. "I had a lot of thoughts running through my head, and at times I even wanted to stop. I wondered: 'What am I going to do? If it's four years, who would want me? Am I healthy enough?'" Pogba recalled.
The French star also criticized Juventus for not supporting him during his training while suspended. The midfielder said: "I wasn't allowed to do anything, including hire a coach from Juventus or receive special treatment at the club. They weren't really there for me. That feeling hurt me deeply. I don't understand why. I told myself I was fighting against doping, not against Juventus."
Pogba's last appearance was in September 2023. Meanwhile, the last time the midfielder played a full 90 minutes was more than three years ago, when he was still playing for Manchester United.
Monaco have secured a place in next season's Champions League, so they are determined to strengthen their squad. Besides Pogba, the Ligue 1 club has successfully signed Eric Dier on a free transfer. Monaco are also in negotiations to sign striker Ansu Fati from Barcelona on a loan deal with an option to buy.
