Delegates performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate the new transport route.
Mekong Express operates two trips per week, with barge transportation services that shorten transit time from 48 hours for river routes to only 15 hours thanks to the combination of river and sea routes, equivalent to a 70% improvement in time. The transportation distance is shortened from about 367km to 200km, contributing to optimizing efficiency and saving costs for shippers nationwide. Mekong Express's first shipment arrived at the port on May 30, marking the first time the service route has been put into operation.
Mekong Express is designed to transport dry and refrigerated cargo, with a capacity of up to hundreds of TEUs per voyage and the ability to handle large numbers of reefer containers. The partners also plan to expand the route, adding additional stops at Saigon Premier Container Terminal (SPCT) - a port operated by DP World - and Saigon Hiep Phuoc Port of Vietnam National Shipping Lines. This is a more sustainable solution than road transport, reducing carbon emissions by up to 60%. By equipping the service with a cargo monitoring system and real-time emissions tracking, DP World and VIMC Lines expect Mekong Express to achieve its goal of net zero emissions by 2026.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc He highly appreciated the results of the strategic cooperation between the DP World consortium and Vietnam National Shipping Lines when officially launching Mekong Express, bringing effective logistics solutions, contributing to promoting trade in the Mekong Delta region and the whole country. The Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee emphasized that Can Tho is committed to always accompanying businesses to remove obstacles in institutions, mechanisms, policies, legal regulations, creating favorable conditions for businesses to operate production and business... At the same time, the city will continue to propose to the Ministry of Construction , the Vietnam Maritime Administration and Inland Waterways to have long-term solutions to maintain the stability of the waterway, ensuring standards up to a depth of -6.5m for ships with a capacity of 10,000 tons or more to enter and exit the city's ports to promote exploitation efficiency.
