It is currently the season of ripe fruit, so the market inside and outside the province is abundant with regional specialties from North to South such as plums, guava, jackfruit, apples, oranges, durian, etc. At this time, fruit growers in Duc Linh district are also busy harvesting durian and green-skin pomelos. In which, Dong Ha Green-skin Pomelo Cooperative is an example, affirming the regional brand.
Fruitful
We were present at the large fruit growing area of Dong Ha green-skinned grapefruit cooperative, in Mui Tau area, village 2A, Dong Ha commune, Duc Linh district in the middle of June. The mid-morning rain had just stopped, and the entrance to the garden of Mr. Nguyen Duy Khang - Director of Dong Ha green-skinned grapefruit cooperative became cooler. On both sides of the road were vast grapefruit and durian trees laden with fruit.
A local farmer introduced that many durian trees here are over 10 years old, spreading their canopies like ancient trees, but the amount of fruit they produce every year is huge. When we arrived, a group of traders were coming to Mr. Khang's garden to harvest themselves and buy at wholesale prices. The director of this cooperative introduced that the entire cooperative currently produces 14 hectares, of which 10 hectares are grapefruit and 4 hectares are Ri 6 durian.
Durian is harvested from April to June every year (1 crop per year). Each hectare of durian yields about 40 tons/year, with a stable wholesale price at the garden of about 50,000 VND/kg and retail price of 100,000 VND/kg.
Dong Ha green-skinned grapefruit bears fruit all year round, but the two main seasons are the 5th of the 5th lunar month and the Lunar New Year. Currently, the grapefruit garden is being harvested, with wholesale prices of 20,000 VND/kg and retail prices of 25,000 VND/kg.
According to Mr. Khang, Dong Ha has very suitable climate and soil conditions for growing fruit trees, especially durian and green-skinned grapefruit, the quality of the products is equivalent to that of fruits grown in the Western provinces. If anyone pays attention, they will know that for a long time, the Ba Cay green-skinned grapefruit brand (Dong Ha) has been known in many domestic markets for its delicious, fresh, sweet taste typical of the region. However, according to the garden owner, the limitation of green-skinned grapefruit grown here compared to the West is that it is still inferior in color. Regarding the future direction, the Director of Dong Ha green-skinned grapefruit cooperative said that the cooperative is calculating to expand the area and continue to build the brand. At the same time, developing an ecological agricultural model and cuisine along the La Nga river so that more people know about it.
Continuously improve quality
Dong Ha Green-Skin Grapefruit Cooperative was established in 2017 with 9 members. The goal of the Cooperative is to connect farmers in grapefruit production, provide seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and guarantee product output for members and farmers in the area through cooperation with units. It is known that the Cooperative annually supplies the market with about 200 tons of grapefruit at stable prices. The Cooperative has created a logo for the product: "Ba Cay Green-Skin Grapefruit". At the same time, grapefruit is produced in a safe direction, using organic fertilizers, biological pesticides, and spraying according to the correct process to ensure safety for users, increasingly spreading the brand of Dong Ha green-skin grapefruit products far and wide.
Assessing the development of fruit trees in the area, the People's Committee of Duc Linh district said that up to now, the whole district has nearly 2,400 hectares of fruit trees, reaching 102% of the plan. Of which, the harvested area is 1,716 hectares, the yield is 76.47 quintals/ha, the output is 13,120 tons. The locality is continuing to expand the area and invest in science and technology in organic and safe care, flower treatment, and increased fruit set to increase productivity and product quality. In parallel, it is associated with registering for growing area codes and tracing the origin to expand the product consumption market and increase value. In the district, there are a number of products that meet OCOP standards that have been put on the e-commerce trading floor, including the Ba Cay green-skinned grapefruit product that meets 3-star standards (Dong Ha green-skinned grapefruit cooperative).
“Heavenly time, favorable terrain, and harmonious people” – when all of the above factors are present, it is expected that Duc Linh land will fully exploit its soil and climate advantages, combined with hard-working and diligent farmers, to develop a quality fruit area, making anyone who comes to this land amazed and looking to buy the fruits that have created a regional brand.
