Iran's Cristiano Ronaldo is at risk of being punished with 99 lashes for hugging and kissing a female Iranian fan - an act that violates Islamic law.
During a trip to Iran to play for Al Nassr in September, Ronaldo met a special fan. Fatima Hamami, a disabled female artist who paints football pictures with her feet, requested to meet the Portuguese striker and got her wish. During the meeting in Tehran, in front of the media, Ronaldo took a photo with Hamami. The Al Nassr striker gave her his shirt, hugged the female artist and kissed her on the head. In return, Hamami gave Ronaldo the pictures she had drawn of him.

Everything went smoothly until Ronaldo returned to Saudi Arabia. Several Iranian lawyers filed a lawsuit against the 39-year-old striker for violating Islamic law. According to Iranian TV channel Sharq Emroz , Ronaldo's actions were classified as adultery, which could result in him being imprisoned and receiving 99 lashes. The Al Nassr striker would face this punishment if he returned to Iran.
Ronaldo will travel to Iran to play for Al Nassr against Persepolis in the AFC Champions League. After qualifying from the play-offs, they have been drawn in Group E, alongside the Iranian club, Qatari club Al-Duhail and Tajikistan club Istiklol. Having played at Persepolis, Ronaldo will not return to Iran in the group stage. However, if Al Nassr make it to the round of 16, Ronaldo could be forced to return to Iran if the draw pits him against another Iranian club.
Ronaldo moved to Saudi Arabia to play for Al Nassr in January 2023. Since then, he has had to adapt to the lifestyle and culture in the Muslim country. By law, Ronaldo is not allowed to live with his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez because they are not married. However, the Saudi government has made concessions on this. Rodriguez also has to follow the dress code for women in the Muslim world when she has to keep her modesty in public. In early September, after a long search, Ronaldo and his family moved into a villa. Before that, they lived in a hotel.
Recently, there was information that Ronaldo wanted to renew his contract with Al Nassr. The 39-year-old striker wants to stabilize and maintain his form to attend the 2026 World Cup held in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Al Nassr are currently third in the Saudi Pro League with 19 points from nine games, four points behind leaders Al Hilal. Ronaldo has scored 10 goals in eight Saudi Pro League appearances and one goal in two AFC Champions League appearances this season.
