Having won five Ballon d'Ors and two FIFA The Best awards, 39-year-old striker Cristiano Ronaldo believes these two awards are increasingly unreliable.
"We have to analyze the performance of the player based on the whole season," Ronaldo told Portuguese newspaper Record exclusively on January 21. "I'm not saying that Messi doesn't deserve the award, or Erling Haaland or even Kylian Mbappe. I simply don't believe in these awards anymore. The Ballon d'Or and The Best are losing credibility. The numbers are the reality."

At the Globe Soccer Awards, also known as the "Dubai Golden Ball" on January 19, Ronaldo was honored three times in the categories: "Most Favorite Player of the Year", "Best Middle Eastern Player" and "Maradona Award for Top Scorer of the Year". The "Best Player of the Year" award was given to Haaland. Messi owns both the Golden Ball and The Best, but did not receive any awards from Globe Soccer.
The Ballon d'Or is considered the most prestigious individual award in football, awarded by France Football magazine since 1956 to European players, and in 1995 expanded to world-class players. Voters for the award are journalists around the world, selected by the magazine. Messi holds the record for winning eight Ballons d'Or, while Ronaldo is second with five awards.
The Best is an individual award of FIFA, voted by coaches, national team captains, journalists and fans, with 25% weighting from each group. The Best was first awarded in 2016, and to date Messi is still the most successful with three awards, while Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski have won the award twice. The Best 2023 award was given to Messi, which made the public consider it a joke.
Globe Soccer has been awarded since 2011, with Ronaldo winning the "Best Player of the Year" award six times. The award is voted for by fans and a panel of former players, coaches and journalists. Four of the last five categories Ronaldo has received from Globe Soccer were first-time awards, meaning there were no similar categories in previous years. Messi has only won the award once, in the "Best Player of the Year" category in 2015.
