Mr. Thach Hane, in Ba My hamlet, Hoa An commune, Cau Ke district ( Tra Vinh province) is one of the members and farmers who boldly converted their mixed gardens to grow chives (chives, chives - a type of aromatic vegetable, spice vegetable...).
In recent years, the movement of farmers competing in production and good business in Cau Ke district (Tra Vinh province) has continuously developed, including the model of growing chives (chives, chives).
Many farmers with effective production and business models have increased income, improved family life, and contributed to local economic development, including the chive growing model in Hoa An commune.
Mr. Thach Hane, in Ba My hamlet, Hoa An commune, Cau Ke district (Tra Vinh province) is one of the local farmers who boldly converted his mixed garden to grow chives.
Talking about the process of growing chives, Mr. Hane said: through research, he found that chives are suitable for the soil and economic conditions of his family. In 2023, he converted 1.3 hectares of his family's mixed garden to grow chives.
After more than 2 months of planting, the first crop of chives yielded more than 1.3 tons, with the selling price of chives being 16,000 VND/kg, after deducting production costs, the profit was more than 12 million VND.
Seeing that growing chives is economically effective, Mr. Hane decided to rent an additional 1.2 hectares of garden area from the surrounding people to expand the chive growing.
Currently, with a total area of more than 1.3 hectares of chives, Mr. Hane takes care of the harvest in a continuous rotation, harvesting an average of 150 - 200 kg of chives per day to sell to traders, at the current price of 14,000 VND/kg.
On average, Mr. Hane harvests over 5 tons of chives per month. After deducting production costs, he still has a profit of about 50 million VND.
Because the area for growing chives is quite large, Mr. Hane has currently hired 10 local workers to help with the steps of caring for, weeding, and harvesting chives. He pays each worker 180,000 VND/day.
Talking about the economic efficiency of growing chives, Mr. Hane said: Before, I grew chives on more than one hectare. Later, I found that growing chives was more economically efficient than rice, so I rented more land from local people to expand production.
Up to now, the total area for growing chives is more than 1.3 hectares, the care technique is also relatively easy, mainly using organic fertilizer to help chives grow green, well and limit pests and diseases, and are purchased by traders at stable prices, now family life is much more stable than before.
Mr. Kim Hoanh Thuone, in Tra Khao hamlet, Hoa An commune, Cau Ke district (Tra Vinh province) is one of the farmer members with a stable income from growing chives.
Mr. Thach Hane, in Ba My hamlet, Hoa An commune, Cau Ke district (Tra Vinh province) (standing in the middle) discussed techniques for growing chives and how to care for chives (a type of aromatic vegetable, spice...) with the leaders of the Cau Ke district Farmers' Association. Chives are a delicious vegetable, an easy-to-grow spice, can be processed into many dishes, and are good for your health...
Mr. Thuone said that seeing that the local chive growing model is more economically efficient than rice growing, in early 2024 he converted 1.5 hectares of his family's rice fields to grow chives. After 2 months of growing the first crop of chives, he harvested more than 1 ton and sold it to traders at a price of 13,000 VND/kg.
After deducting production costs, Mr. Kim Hoanh Thuone still has a profit of more than 10 million VND/month. After the first harvest of chives, from then until now, he has harvested about 1.3 tons per month, earning an income of 15 million VND, from which his family has become more stable.
“I saw that the local chive growing model brought stable income to my family, so I converted 1.5 hectares of rice fields to grow chives. After 2 months of growing, I started to harvest more than 1 ton. After that, I harvested once a month. The care process was also easy. After harvesting, I applied organic fertilizer and weeded so that the chives could grow well. I saw that the chive growing model was 4 times more effective than growing rice,” said Thuone.
From the effectiveness of the chive growing model, in August 2024, the Farmers' Association of Cau Ke district (Tra Vinh province) mobilized to establish a chive growing professional association in Hoa An commune, with 19 members who are farmers with chive growing areas in the locality participating, with a total area of 5.7 hectares.
Since its establishment, members of the Association have been trained and guided in applying scientific and technical advances in production, creating clean, quality products, improving productivity and stabilizing product output.
On average, currently, each month, members of the Chive Growing Association in Hoa An commune harvest and sell about 42 tons of chives to the market, earning over 470 million VND. This stable source of income has helped the members of the Association have a better life.
Evaluating the effectiveness of the chive growing model of the Chive Growing Professional Association in Hoa An commune, comrade Huynh Van Nguyen, Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Cau Ke district (Tra Vinh province) said: through a practical survey, it was found that the model of the Chive Growing Professional Association in Hoa An commune has brought about practical results. Thanks to the conversion to chive growing, up to now, the members of the Association have had a fairly stable life, with profits four times higher than growing rice.
In the future, the District Association will continue to direct the Association's grassroots units to mobilize farmer members to establish branches and professional associations so that members can exchange experiences in production as well as link up to find output for products.
At the same time, actively propagate and mobilize members to convert crop structure from ineffective crops and old gardens to growing vegetables, coordinate with relevant sectors to open training courses to transfer science and technology.
This helps farmers in Cau Ke district master the technical process of cultivation and animal husbandry to apply in production, contributing to economic efficiency, increasing income and improving the material and spiritual life of farmers.
The chive growing model of the Chive Growing Professional Association in Hoa An commune has brought about quite high economic efficiency, helping many families become well-off, have a more stable life, contributing to the locality maintaining the income criteria in building new rural areas and continuing to improve in the coming time.
