Book 'Financial Education': Changing awareness, behavior and habits of using financial services for students

The book series "Financial Education" provides basic, familiar financial knowledge related to daily life and helps students form better financial thinking.

On the afternoon of August 18, in Hanoi , Vietnam Education Publishing House in collaboration with Tan Viet Book Company (Tan Viet Bookstore) organized a program to introduce the book series "Financial Education" for students from grades 1 to 12.

Necessary and appropriate steps in line with global educational development trends

“Financial Education” is a series of specialized books on the comprehensive "subject" of School Finance in Vietnam. The series of books is systematically designed for students from grades 1 to 12 in accordance with the 2018 General Education Program and standards on knowledge of the banking and financial systems of Vietnam and internationally using an interdisciplinary method and compatible with the knowledge base of students in each grade.

The book series consists of three parts, scientifically arranged, valuable in knowledge, ensuring interdisciplinary and pedagogical aspects to be suitable for both teaching and learning at all levels. The book series provides basic financial knowledge, close to, related to daily life and forms better financial thinking for students. The content focuses on basic issues of finance, currency, and banking.

In particular, in each lesson, hundreds of folk songs, proverbs, and idioms have been used in combination with financial knowledge to help students easily remember, understand, absorb, and apply, inspiring filial piety, love of work, love of homeland and country, effort, and responsibility and aspiration in life.

Through that, students can understand about money such as: Value, history of money, inflation, deflation, interest rates, exchange rates, regulations on the use of domestic and foreign currencies; understand about financial investments such as stocks, bonds, insurance, fund certificates, deposit certificates; understand about banking such as history, banking activities, savings, loans; understand about taxes, gold, investment, startups, personal financial management...

In recent times, financial education has been actively implemented by the Government and many ministries and agencies to meet the requirements of equipping the community with financial knowledge and skills in the context of strong digital transformation and integration.

However, compared to the requirements, Vietnam's financial education needs many changes to meet current requirements. The development of science and technology brings many benefits to society but also causes many financial risks if the community is not equipped with good financial knowledge. Technology crimes, online fraud, "black credit", trading in fake and poor quality goods on cyberspace... are taking place complicatedly around the world. From that reality, it is necessary to raise awareness, knowledge and financial skills to contribute to protecting consumers using financial services.

The current system of financial education materials is often scattered, unsystematic and mainly foreign documents. That leads to the limitation of popularizing knowledge suitable for the specific economic structure, culture, perception, etc. of our country. In fact, to raise public awareness of finance, it is necessary to have the most effective teaching approach in high schools.

Therefore, the publication and distribution of this book series by the Vietnam Education Publishing House and Tan Viet Bookstore is a necessary, urgent step and in line with the global education development trend. If young people are equipped with good financial knowledge, their awareness, behavior and habits will change, creating a better financial community. That will help reduce financial risks for them, their families and society. Moreover, equipping them with good financial knowledge will help them have better skills and thinking when starting a business and in their future life.

Help students understand the value of labor and money

MSc. Le Thi Thuy Sen, author of the book series, said: "I have a desire to share knowledge about finance, currency and economics with young people in Vietnam. My wish is to contribute a small part to help young people change their awareness, behavior and habits of using financial services. When they have better knowledge, together we will build a healthier financial community."

The book series by MSc. Le Thi Thuy Sen and her colleagues is not a book about getting rich, but aims to provide scientific knowledge about finance, currency and analyze the impact of economic factors on personal financial activities. The ultimate goal is to help people have enough knowledge and skills to manage personal finances more effectively, thereby improving the quality of life.

"Financial education is not only about imparting dry knowledge about money, saving or investing, but also about sowing seeds of humanity, nurturing habits and behaviors, and creating good financial virtues. Therefore, the greatest wish and reward for the author and the team of consultants and associates is for the book series to be widely spread to students, contributing to bringing good things about financial knowledge to the community and society," Ms. Le Thi Thuy Sen emphasized.

Expressing his opinion, Mr. Nguyen Tien Thanh, Chairman of the Board of Members, General Director of Vietnam Education Publishing House said: "Finance is associated with people from the time they are in the womb, and is one of the key issues that every person needs to deal with every day. Equipping students with early knowledge, understanding and financial skills will help them understand the value of labor, money, the operation of finance and currency, develop their thinking and personal financial skills, thereby becoming responsible citizens for themselves, their families and society."

Commenting on the book series, Prof. Dr. Hoang Van Cuong, Member of the National Assembly's Economic and Financial Committee, Vice Chairman of the State Council of Professors, said: "Money is something familiar to everyone, but not everyone understands it correctly. Many people make mistakes because of money. Financial education helps students gain basic knowledge, know how to use money appropriately, see the monetary policy management mechanism of the State Bank and understand the financial relationships related to the use of money to consider and make appropriate choices when deciding to participate."
