In fact, Filip Nguyen has expressed his desire to play for the Vietnamese national team for a long time, when he was still playing in the Czech Republic. However, the procedures for obtaining Vietnamese citizenship are not simple, while the goalkeeper born in 1992 still has to live and play football abroad. Currently, Filip Nguyen is playing for the Hanoi Police Club and residing in Vietnam, so the naturalization process has been expedited.
Filip Nguyen is currently the number 1 goalkeeper of the reigning V-League champion Hanoi Police.
With Filip Nguyen successfully naturalized as a Vietnamese citizen, he will have the opportunity to play for the national team. However, whether or not he is called up to the team depends entirely on the decision of coach Philippe Troussier. The French coach has an open way of using people and will most likely want to test the Vietnamese-American goalkeeper.
If called up, Filip Nguyen will be able to join the Vietnamese national team in the important tournament of the 2023 Asian Cup (taking place from January 12 to February 10, 2024 in Qatar). The 2023 Asian Cup will feature 24 teams, divided into six groups. Each group will play a round robin to determine points and rankings. The top two teams in each group and the four third-placed teams with the best results will advance to the round of 16. Coach Troussier and his players will aim to advance past the group stage. At the most recent Asian Cup (2019), Coach Park Hang-seo's team reached the quarter-finals.
