“Pure ice” or “clean ice” is a product used in most restaurants, cafes, eateries, and sidewalk cafes because of its quick cooling, convenience, and affordable price… However, behind the carefree, comfortable use of the product by customers, an unclean production process is taking place…

Coming to an ice production facility located deep in an alley in Thach Ha town (Thach Ha district), posing as a customer needing to buy ice, the group of reporters were shocked by the dirty and unsanitary scenes taking place.
The machines were all rusty, dilapidated, and severely degraded. In every stage of production, the workers of this facility used their bare hands, and the packaging was done entirely by hand. After being put into bags, the ice was dropped directly onto the sticky floor.

It is worth mentioning that at the shaved ice machine, green moss is clinging to the pipe - where the finished ice will be pushed out, but the facility still calmly takes ice from there to package. According to the reporter's investigation, the facility sells 7 - 8 tons of ice a day, the machine runs continuously for 17 - 18 hours. This also means that many customers have used ice products with an unsecured production process.

At the ice production facility in Cam Loc commune (Cam Xuyen district), the ice making machine is located in the family's living area; the seller calmly packs ice for customers with his bare hands; the machinery is rusty, the water filter is covered with green moss...

What is worrying is that the water source for making ice is not tap water but is taken from a well. This facility also supplies a large amount of ice to local residents, who according to the seller... "have to run the ice machine all day without stopping".
Only 5 - 10 thousand VND for a 5 kg bag of ice cubes, ice balls, shaved ice. The low price plus the convenience and speed make ice a "hot" item. According to current regulations, for the production of pure ice that meets standards, the water source must be taken from a depth of 90m, processed through a reverse osmosis filtration system and killed with ultraviolet rays. The parts of the ice production system are made of stainless steel, which does not rust. The closed ice production process, carried out completely automatically, without direct contact with human hands, ensures food hygiene and safety... However, through actual surveys, few clean ice production facilities meet that requirement.

Regarding the difficulties in managing, monitoring and detecting ice establishments that do not meet the standards to do business in the area, Mr. Vo Van Dung, Deputy Chief of Office of the People's Council and People's Committee of Thach Ha district, said: "The People's Committee of the district has also established inspection teams, however, at the time of inspection, the establishments were closed and not working. In addition, the majority of the staff working in the field of food safety and hygiene are not specialized, so inspection and handling are not easy."
According to statistics, there are currently dozens of ice production facilities in the province. Many facilities do not meet food hygiene and safety standards. The problem is that management needs to be strengthened and people need to consider and choose when using this product.
