The “lighthouse” here is likened to the role of art spaces in the creative economy , according to experts from the British Council. Ms. Truong Uyen Ly - an independent researcher on creative cultural spaces, said that spaces in Vietnam have maintained stable growth even during the pandemic and continue to attract investors to create new spaces.
“TOONG co-working space has opened many locations in Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City, Laos and Cambodia and is continuing to attract investors to create new spaces.
This success is partly due to the regularly organized art activities such as art exhibitions, art skill sharing courses for everyone, and art exchange and talk sessions. It is the art element that has created for TOONG outstanding value with a unique identity" - Ms. Truong Uyen Ly said.
Most recently, launched in 2022, The Outpost Contemporary Art Center in Hanoi is a new example of a youthful and potential creative space. The Outpost includes functional spaces for exhibitions, events, workshops, multi-purpose halls, shops, and cafes.
Founded on the personal collection of collector Ariel Pham (including 148 works of diverse materials by contemporary Vietnamese and international artists), The Outpost aims to become a private contemporary art museum. The owner of the space wishes to connect art and the public, as well as different creative communities, creating a foundational audience for contemporary Vietnamese art and culture.
In the last days of the year, the art-loving public of Quang Nam - Da Nang is excited about the exhibition "In Ivory White Jade" - considered a breath of fresh air for the art-loving community in Da Nang with rare works by 14 famous painters representing the Indochina School of Fine Arts (1924 - 1945).
This is also the official launch event of Phu Sa Art Foundation at the expanded space of Madame Lan Restaurant. Wishing to bring projects to the public in the future, Madame Lan is expected to become a new cultural and culinary destination in Da Nang City.
From all over the country, art and creative spaces are becoming more and more crowded. Reports from Vietnamese creative spaces show a very encouraging figure, as the number of creative spaces increases in both quality and quantity every year.
If in 2014 there were only 40 spaces, it is estimated that by 2023, this number will have reached more than 200 spaces. Ms. Truong Uyen Ly believes that this is a new development phenomenon with the power and influence to millions of people.
Not only that, the interest in creative spaces from large corporations or companies is also on the rise. Some corporations such as VinGroup, SunGroup, Sovico, Flamingo Group and some other large companies have been building large-scale creative space projects. In addition, there are also private art museums and individual art collectors in Vietnam that are also operating in the form of creative spaces...
Community Connection
In the categories of cultural industry development, the formation and development of creative spaces is a must to achieve the goals set for this new industry. From regenerating vitality and new culture for the locality to the story of exploring, regenerating and enhancing the value of indigenous products, building brands... are the values that creative spaces have formed.
Ms. Truong Uyen Ly believes that creative cultural spaces in Vietnam have gone through the initial spontaneous period, and are starting to enter a period of systematic and organized activities, with full capacity and experience to cooperate at the city, national and international levels to create greater strength.
This is even more reasonable when in Vietnam, three localities Hanoi, Da Lat, Hoi An have joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. In which, Hanoi becomes a creative design city, Da Lat a creative music city and Hoi An a craft and folk art city.
The appearance of three creative cities on the global creative cities map is a solid foundation for Vietnam to be able to determine its goal in the next phase of becoming a cultural industrial center that attracts and converges creativity in the Southeast Asian region.
And it is also time to create an ecosystem for creative spaces. Art spaces in Vietnam are helping local people understand the world and society better, including some projects that simultaneously connect communities.
Community connection is also a goal that needs to be pursued in Hoi An along with the ecosystem of creative spaces. Contemporary artist Chinh Ba - founder of CAB Hoian believes that it is necessary to consider the diversity and integration of the two fields that Hoi An identifies as a creative city.
The need for greater investment in people, initiating creative projects with the business community to support cultural vitality. Including: expanding and promoting creative spaces of the street such as public spaces, workspaces and studios, creative retail spaces, live-work spaces for creative practitioners... is set for Hoi An in the future.
At the recent conference on cultural industry development, creative people proposed that the Government continue to invest heavily in public-private creative projects as a way of practical research. From there, continue to improve infrastructure and policies, create a public-private fund to incubate creative cultural projects...
Open creative spaces are becoming more and more numerous, like a seed of hope for a multi-dimensional approach and voice in art, so that the "lighthouses" can continue to shine...
