Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway to be expanded soon
Ho Chi Minh City will start construction on the road expansion project connecting to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway at the end of this month. The City Transport Department will select contractors, consultants for supervision and construction insurance, and submit to the Department of Construction for approval a plan for road and waterway traffic diversion to serve the construction process.
Currently, the road leading to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway is often congested due to overload. Therefore, the project to expand this expressway will contribute to improving the traffic network in the area, reducing congestion and increasing inter-regional connectivity, especially to Long Thanh International Airport.
The 55km-long Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, with 4 lanes, has been put into operation since 2016 with a total investment of more than VND20,600 billion.
However, after nearly a decade of use, traffic volume on this route has increased by an average of 10.45% per year, causing the section from An Phu intersection to Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway intersection to exceed 25% of its capacity, causing serious congestion.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, to solve this situation, the highway expansion project is divided into two sections.
Section 1 (from An Phu intersection to Ring Road 2, 3.2 km long) is being implemented by Ho Chi Minh City, and was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council in July 2024.
This expressway access road will be expanded from 4 to 8 lanes, and Muong Kenh bridge and Do Xuan Hop overpass will be expanded. With a total capital of nearly 1,000 billion VND from the Ho Chi Minh City budget.
