Dead fish floating on Thi Nghe canal, mainly tilapia, appeared from Thi Nghe bridge (District 1) to Cong Ly bridge (District 3) for about 5km. The fish floated with bloated bellies and began to show signs of bloating and giving off a foul smell.
Dead fish lie interspersed with garbage and water hyacinth. In this canal, hundreds of thousands of other fish are struggling to the surface to breathe. In the hot sun of Ho Chi Minh City, it is likely that these fish will continue to die en masse.
Fish were drowning and raised their heads to the surface to breathe in Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal at noon on May 8.
This situation appeared after heavy rain on the afternoon of May 7.
Fish began to show signs of dying belly up in the canal.
Dead fish mixed with waste cause pollution along a 10km long canal.
The smell of dead fish began to rise in this area, making people worried.
Most of the dead fish were tilapia, red tilapia, and carp.
Hundreds of thousands of fish floating on the canal surface are at risk of mass death.
At Dien Bien Phu Bridge (connecting District 1 with District 3) and at Kieu Bridge, Hoang Hoa Tham Bridge (connecting District 1 with Phu Nhuan), dead fish are densely packed. Many layers of dead fish have gathered in a large area on the canal. The hot weather causes the dead fish to quickly swell and emit a foul smell, creating a polluted atmosphere in this area.
After the recent first rains of the season, people knew there would be dead fish floating on the canals, but many people did not expect so many dead fish.
This is not the first time fish in Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal have died after the first rains of the season.
Dead fish were scattered along a nearly 10km long canal.
Sanitation workers have begun to collect dead fish from the canal to prevent pollution.
According to records, for many years now, when the first rains of the season fall on Ho Chi Minh City, the situation of fish dying en masse on the canals has occurred. At the beginning of the rainy season in 2016, the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal, about 10km long, passing through districts 1, 3, Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan, Tan Binh, sanitation workers collected more than 70 tons of dead fish, and took them away for treatment to protect the environment.
Authorities have taken many measures to limit the death of fish in the canal during the first rains of the season, such as using chemicals to purify the water, improve the water environment, and regenerate fish resources. However, every year, the situation of mass fish deaths in the canal still occurs.
Also on May 8, environmental sanitation workers used specialized ships to collect trash and dead fish from the canal to prevent water pollution.
