Law enforcement in several U.S. cities stepped up security measures on January 2, after an attack in New Orleans and an explosion outside the Trump hotel in Las Vegas raised the prospect of increased threats during a month of large-scale public events.

Washington DC police have deployed extra forces across the city following recent incidents. Washington is the site of the state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter on January 9 and the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. On January 19, Republicans will hold a victory rally at the Capital One Arena in Washington.
On January 6, the US Congress is expected to confirm Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election on November 5, 2024. This is a ceremony of "national security significance", so the US Secret Service (USSS) will be primarily responsible for ensuring security.
In New York City, police increased their presence around Penn Station and closed nearby streets. Following the attack in New Orleans, the city's police department tightened security at several locations, including Trump Tower and Times Square.
USSS spokesman Matthew Young stressed that the agency will continue to coordinate with federal, state and local law enforcement partners to assess the situation on the ground and will adjust security plans as necessary.
Earlier, in the first hours of 2025, a pickup truck plowed into a crowd in the French Quarter of New Orleans, killing 15 people. Police identified the suspect as Shamsud Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old American citizen. This subject acted in a “lone wolf” manner.
