At the 33rd SEA Games in Muay Thai, Thai fighters reached the finals in 16 out of 17 weight categories (both men and women). The only one to be eliminated in the semi-finals was Phetsuphan P. Daorungruang, also known as Chalongchai Meeniladee. In the 51 kg semi-final, Phetsuphan lost on points to Rafael Yasay of the Philippines with a score of 28-29.
Dissatisfied with the result, Phetsuphan shared on his personal page that he "trained very hard for the SEA Games 33, starving himself for months (related to not receiving subsidies from the Sports Authority of Thailand) but still didn't miss a single training session. It was all in vain."
"I had bad luck," he wrote, "Before the fight, one of the coaches told me that in the 51 kg weight class I was competing in, they would rig the result so that the Malaysian fighter would win the gold medal. As you can see, that's exactly what happened."
In an interview with Muay Siam, Phetsuphan stated that he was shocked from the very first round, despite performing better but losing on points. In the second and third rounds, he continued to perform at his usual level and dominated his opponent, but ultimately Yasay Rafael was declared the winner. This led to fierce booing and protests from the fans in the arena. Meanwhile, in the other semi-final, the Malaysian fighter defeated his Myanmar opponent to advance to the final.
After being eliminated, in a state of disappointment, Phetsuphan announced his retirement from amateur Muay Thai because he "had understood its true nature" and would switch to professional Muay Thai. Nation TV commented that this incident seriously damaged fans' trust in the scoring standards of Muay Thai at the 33rd SEA Games.
