Living in an area at high risk of landslides, on the night of September 9, the family of Mr. Sung Seo Lan in Hanh Phuc village, San Chai commune, Si Ma Cai district, along with dozens of other households in the village, were moved by the authorities to the cultural house for shelter. By the morning of September 10, the family's house had collapsed dozens of meters into the negative slope. This timely decision by the commune has avoided the danger of natural disasters for many households.

"The commune government came to persuade us, and our family decided to move to the commune cultural house and felt very safe. Commune officials and benefactors also supported us with instant noodles, candy, and rice," said Sung Seo Lan.

Many households in Simacai located in areas at risk of landslides have been relocated to safe areas.

In the recent flood, San Chai was the locality that suffered heavy damage with 7 people dead, 5 injured, many houses collapsed and completely damaged. After the natural disaster, the locality still has 5 residential areas with 57 households at risk of landslides. Along with reviewing, closely monitoring the situation and warning the people, the locality encouraged people to proactively move to schools, cultural houses, and relatives' houses in safe areas.

Mr. Le Thanh Nghi, Chairman of the People's Committee of San Chai Commune, Si Ma Cai District, said: "The commune also propagates and mobilizes people to find suitable locations to build houses and stabilize their lives. Invite relevant departments and offices to survey those locations to see if they are safe. If they are safe, they will propagate and mobilize people to build houses there."

Households that have to be relocated are provided with temporary accommodation and meals.

In response to the storm, Simacai district has urgently evacuated over 800 households at risk of subsidence and landslides to safe shelters; all households have been provided with temporary accommodation. In the long term, the district is reassessing all households with damaged and at-risk houses to develop a plan to support people to stabilize their housing.

Mr. Hoang Van Duong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Si Ma Cai district added: "The policy is that from now until December 31, no one will be left homeless. Take advantage of the province's investment resources in the district and support from philanthropists to solve the housing problem for the people."

According to statistics, Si Ma Cai has 970 households that have to be relocated due to natural disasters. Ensuring stable housing for thousands of households is not easy. Along with determination and effort, the locality needs large investment resources, safe land funds and many other conditions to ensure the set goals.
