Since the beginning of 2025, the country has recorded 81,691 suspected measles cases in 63 provinces and cities. Compared to the time with the highest number of cases in the week, the number of cases recorded in the week has decreased by 30%.

In 2025, the number of cases tends to increase from week 9 (the period after Tet); the number of cases tends to level off in week 14, and starts to decrease in weeks 15 to 17. Most of the provinces with increasing cases are in the northern region, the northern provinces have increased cases starting from 2025 (in 2024 the number of cases is very low). The number of cases in the remaining regions has basically leveled off and the increasing trend is not as clear as before.

The age of the disease has begun to change by age group after the end of the measles vaccination campaign: Compared to the first 3 months of 2025, the group from over 1 year old to 10 years old (accounting for 65.8%) decreased by 1.6%; slightly decreased in the group under 1 year old (accounting for 2.9%), decreased by 0.2% (including the group of children under 6 months old who are not indicated for measles vaccination); the group over 10 years old (accounting for 31.3%) increased by 1.8% (the group over 10 years old: 11-15 years old accounts for 15.8%; and the group over 16 years old accounts for 13.7%).

Most provinces and cities have urgently developed plans, organized local implementation, and mobilized the participation and support of departments and local authorities in reviewing subjects and organizing implementation. Up to now, 54/54 provinces have completed vaccination for 777,451/806,267 subjects, reaching 96.4%, of which 52/54 provinces achieved a vaccination rate of over 95% (reaching the planned target); 2/54 provinces have a high vaccination rate of 90-95%.

Faced with this situation, the health sector has implemented many drastic measures.

On April 21, 2025, the Ministry of Health issued Decision No. 1340/QD-BYT on promulgating the Plan to implement the 3rd measles vaccination campaign in 2025. Regarding the vaccine supply situation, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology has allocated 451,700 doses of vaccine in the first phase to the regional Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology and Pasteur to distribute to provinces and cities to organize vaccination.

Up to now, provinces and cities have been developing local plans according to the guidance of the Ministry of Health to organize and implement the campaign according to the above plan, and at the same time directing medical facilities to strengthen medical examination, treatment and infection control.

Although the epidemic situation has shown signs of easing, the health sector still recognizes that there are many challenges. Currently, awareness among a segment of the population is still limited, leading to a fear of vaccination. In addition, the number of grassroots health workers is still low, making implementation difficult.

To respond effectively, on April 26, 2025, the Ministry of Health issued Official Dispatch No. 2513/BYT-PB to the People's Committees of provinces and centrally run cities, the Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology, and the Pasteur Institute on strengthening the direction of epidemic prevention and control work during the transitional season.

To strengthen vaccination work, the Ministry of Health directs the Department of Health of provinces and cities to urge provinces and cities to accelerate the organization of the 3rd measles vaccination campaign in 2025 in the area, completing the first vaccination before April 30, 2025, the second vaccination before May 15, 2025 according to Decision No. 1340/QD-BYT dated April 21, 2025 of the Ministry of Health on the implementation of the 3rd measles vaccination campaign in 2025.

Localities proactively coordinate closely with media agencies, newspapers and grassroots media systems to update information on the epidemic situation and disease prevention recommendations for people; strengthen communication to encourage and mobilize families and parents to take their children for full and timely vaccination.

Medical facilities need to do a good job of triaging, admitting, treating patients and controlling infections. Medical facilities must ensure full and timely reporting of disease cases according to regulations. The Ministry of Health hopes to receive the attention and cooperation of the press and the community in the work of preventing measles.
