Ho Chi Minh City: Saigon General Hospital merged into Gia Dinh People's Hospital

(Dan Tri) - The People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has just issued a decision to reorganize Saigon General Hospital by merging this unit with another hospital under the Department of Health, from January 1, 2026.

Accordingly, Ho Chi Minh City decided to reorganize Saigon General Hospital by merging it into Gia Dinh People's Hospital under the Department of Health , starting from January 1, 2026.

From the above time, Saigon General Hospital officially ceased operations.

All functions, tasks, organizational structure, personnel, facilities, equipment, finance, assets... and related rights and obligations of this unit are transferred to Gia Dinh People's Hospital for continued management, exploitation and use in accordance with the provisions of law.

After reorganization, Gia Dinh People's Hospital is a public health service unit under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, with legal status, headquarters, seal, separate account, and is allowed to open accounts at the State Treasury and banks according to the provisions of law.

After reorganization, Gia Dinh People's Hospital has 2 working offices including the main facility at 1 No Trang Long, Gia Dinh ward and the second facility at 125 Le Loi, Ben Thanh ward.

Gia Dinh People's Hospital continues to apply the ranking decision issued before the reorganization, until there are new instructions or regulations from the competent authority.

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee requested the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health to guide Gia Dinh People's Hospital to develop a job position project and approve it in accordance with regulations.

The Department of Health needs to direct, guide, urge, and resolve difficulties and problems related to projects and professional issues of the Hospital; implement policies and regulations for civil servants and employees when implementing reorganization according to regulations.

“During the handover process, all activities of Saigon General Hospital and Gia Dinh People's Hospital will be guaranteed to be continuous and uninterrupted,” the document issued by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee stated.

Previously, since June 18, Gia Dinh People's Hospital has deployed a satellite clinic, as well as sent experts from the fields of digestive surgery, respiratory medicine, cardiology, nephrology - urology, geriatrics, pediatrics and obstetrics to Saigon General Hospital to provide comprehensive professional support.

This is a strategic step of the city's health sector in the development roadmap of grassroots health care, towards the goal of turning Saigon General Hospital into the second facility of Gia Dinh People's Hospital.

Saigon General Hospital was built in 1937, witnessing many historical periods of the country.

After 88 years of ups and downs, the Hospital still faces many difficulties and problems, such as lack of investment funding, medical equipment, human resources... but all medical staff always strive to overcome the challenges step by step.

Every day, the hospital receives 600-700 outpatients, with 10% of foreigners being examined. The hospital is in the top 3 most effective satellite stations of the 115 Emergency Center system, and is also the first unit in the country to pilot the 2-wheel ambulance model.
