iOS 18 brings many useful new features for users, including a new "Apps" page, eye-tracking, vehicle motion cues, dark mode for icons, the ability to delete large files, and the ability to lock and hide apps.
The iOS 18 update speed is faster than iOS 17 at the same time last year.
With Apple's tight control over software development, iOS updates are typically rolled out to most devices within months of their release. According to the latest figures from Apple, 76% of devices released in the last four years (including the iPhone 14, 15, and 16) are now running iOS 18. In total, 68% of all devices have updated to this new version.
Meanwhile, iOS 17 still holds a significant market share, with over 19% of all devices launched in the past four years running it. Apple says this market share is measured based on devices that were traded on the App Store as of January 21st.
iOS 18 is more appealing to users than iOS 17.
Compared to last year, when Apple reported that 76% of devices in the past four years were using iOS 17 and 66% of all devices were running that version, iOS 18 has seen a 2% increase even though the figures were released earlier.
Additionally, Apple also released market share data for iPadOS 18, showing that 63% of devices launched in the past four years are running this version, while 53% of all devices have updated. However, iPadOS 18's market share is lower than iOS 18, with approximately 28% of all iPads still using iPadOS 17 as of 2024.
iOS updates typically reach around 90% adoption by June each year, so we'll need to monitor the development of iOS 18 in the coming months. In the meantime, Apple continues to develop new features for its devices, with the iOS 18.3 update expected to be released between January 27th and February 2nd.
