What is “digital dementia”?
According to Dr Vivek Barun, consultant neurologist and epilepsy specialist at Artemis Hospital, India, “digital dementia” is a cognitive impairment that can occur due to excessive use of digital devices, especially memory problems, difficulty concentrating and impaired cognitive abilities.
Excessive screen time contributes to “digital dementia”
Reduced memory involvement
Dr. Vivek Barun said that using digital devices too much will cause the brain to quickly lose its ability to remember because people are increasingly dependent on technology to store data.
Cognitive overload
Constant exposure to digital devices, especially social media and other rapidly changing content, can overload the brain, leading to difficulty focusing and retaining information.
Sleep disruption
The blue light emitted from screens can disrupt the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. Poor sleep is linked to cognitive decline and memory problems, which further exacerbates the effects of excessive screen use.
Reduced physical activity
Prolonged screen time often reduces physical activity. Regular exercise is known to support cognitive function, so a sedentary lifestyle may contribute to cognitive decline.
Early signs to watch out for
Some common symptoms that may help detect digital dementia early include:
- Memory loss
- Difficulty concentrating
- Time confusion
- Difficulty in tracking time or managing work effectively
- Increasing dependence on digital devices
- Mental fatigue or feeling mentally exhausted after spending a lot of time on digital devices.
How to reduce your risk of digital dementia
- Regularly disconnect from digital devices to give your brain a break and engage in non-digital activities.
- Exercise regularly to improve overall cognitive health.
- Use an app or device settings to monitor and limit daily screen time, especially for non-essential activities.
- Avoid using screens before going to bed to improve sleep quality
- Engage in face-to-face interactions rather than using digital devices, to maintain social skills and emotional regulation.
