Famous Korean monk Do-yeon said he asked to return to secular life and performed a repentant kneeling ritual, after admitting to having a child with his ex-wife after becoming a monk.

"The truth is that I had a second child after joining the Jogye Order. I made a mistake. I deeply apologize to Buddha, Buddhists and acquaintances," South Korean monk Do-yeon, 37, wrote on her personal Instagram page today.

Do-yeon said she has performed the ritual of bowing 108 times before the Buddha statue since July 7 and will spend 100 days repenting.

Officials of the Jogye Order, the largest sect of traditional Korean Buddhism, previously confirmed that monk Doyeon had asked to return to secular life.

The announcement came after allegations emerged that monk Do-yeon had a child after becoming a monk, violating sect rules and teachings.

The Jogye Order prohibits monks from marrying and having romantic relationships, but some smaller sects do not. Monk Do-yeon is said to have married and had his first child while he was in another sect, and his second child was born after he joined the Jogye Order in 2016.

Do-yeon, who graduated from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology before becoming a Buddhist, has written several books while teaching meditation at Bongeunsa Temple in central Seoul and has also been posting frequently on social media.
