The Hungarian player's celebration was faked by AI. |
After Hungary’s World Cup qualifying defeat to Ireland, midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was hit by a storm of public opinion, with some of the criticism coming from Hungary’s own fans.
In particular, a series of AI-generated images went viral online, showing the 25-year-old midfielder making a “crying with both hands” gesture towards Irish fans after he made it 2-1. Among them, one post on X attracted more than two million views, 4,800 reposts and more than 60,000 likes, contributing to the outrage and misinformation.
On TikTok, a series of videos used the above image to direct public opinion, showing joy when the person who mocked the opponent received a bitter end. In the final seconds, Hungary conceded the third goal from Ireland. Szoboszlai sat blankly on the grass, unable to hide his disappointment and shock.

The surge in attention has also drawn criticism from football fans, who believe the "fake crying" celebration was genuine. In reality, Szoboszlai made a hand-to-nose gesture, a gesture many players use to show confidence. In the clip, he also did not celebrate in the direction of the Irish fans.

Hungarian channel M4 Sport released a video of the intervention. |
Meanwhile, the AI-generated image of Szoboszlai covering his face with his hands pretending to cry was meant to replicate Cristiano Ronaldo’s previous actions. This gesture is often thought to be meant to mock someone who is weak, crying, or overreacting.
The momentum was so strong that Hungary's state-run media outlet M4 Sport had to post a video from the pitch, capturing the entire goal celebration, clearly showing that there was no fake crying.
Szoboszlai has been one of Liverpool's standout performers this season, and the defeat to Ireland and the AI-edited image disaster will be a huge blow for Szoboszlai.
