On the morning of June 20, the workshop "Vietnam Taekwondo - joining forces, creating the pinnacle: innovation - solidarity - towards the Olympics" organized by the Vietnam Taekwondo Federation (VTF) took place in Ho Chi Minh City.
The conference received 11 presentations from domestic and foreign coaches and managers. Even the sponsor - CJ Group (Korea) - also contributed ideas on how to bring Vietnamese taekwondo back to its golden age.
Because from the peak of winning the silver medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympics by martial artist Tran Hieu Ngan, Vietnam's taekwondo achievements have gradually declined.
Specifically, after 2 tickets to the 2004 Athens Olympics, 3 tickets to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 2 tickets to the 2012 London Olympics, Vietnamese taekwondo only won 1 ticket to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. In between, there were two empty-handed Olympics with no tickets in Rio 2016 and most recently Paris 2024.

Speaking at the opening of the conference, Vice President and General Secretary of VTF Nguyen Thanh Huy shared: "In the period of 2016-2024, we must frankly acknowledge that Vietnamese taekwondo still maintains its position in the top group of Southeast Asia. However, we have not surpassed Thailand and have not won a medal at the ASIAD or the Olympics since 2000."
"This gap is not only reflected in the number of medals but also in high-speed competition techniques, frequency of international competition and sports science infrastructure.
Therefore, the workshop was organized with the ultimate goal of deeply analyzing the current situation and jointly proposing breakthrough solutions," Mr. Huy added.
Along with organizing a workshop to find a suitable new direction, Vietnam Taekwondo also set specific goals for the 2025-2028 period.
Accordingly, Vietnamese taekwondo will win at least 3 gold medals in combat at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand at the end of this year, win at least 1 silver medal at the 2026 ASIAD and bring at least one athlete into the top 8 of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, creating a solid stepping stone for the dream of an Olympic medal after 2030.
