Doctors from Tinh Anh Eye Center System check eyesight for the elderly.
Free screening
Participating in the program in Chau Thanh, doctors from the Tinh Anh Eye Center system examined, screened, and provided eye care consultation for nearly 4,000 people. During 2 days of operation, the program screened over 700 elderly people in the communes of Quoi Son, Giao Long, An Hoa, An Phuoc, and Huu Dinh. Through the screening activities, doctors provided consultation and support for monitoring and treatment of more than 180 people with eye problems.
As one of the elderly people who was diagnosed with an eye disease, Ms. Tran Thi Khoan (born in 1959), Hoa Long hamlet, Giao Long commune, Chau Thanh district, said: "Recently, both of my eyes have shown signs of not being able to see clearly, there is a veil in my eyes, but due to economic conditions, I have not gone for a check-up or examination. Through free screening, the doctor advised me to have cataract surgery soon, if left for a long time, it will become cloudy, causing glaucoma and there is a possibility of more serious complications."
Detecting eye disease at an early stage, Ms. Tran Thi Khoan expressed her gratitude to the team of doctors and nurses for detecting and advising her to receive early treatment, avoiding dangerous complications that affect her health. Sharing about the meaningful activities of the superior association and the heart of the team of doctors and nurses of the Tinh Anh Eye Center system, Mr. Huynh Trung Truc, residing in Long Thanh hamlet, Giao Long commune, Chau Thanh district, expressed: “Free eye examination and screening activities for people like us are very valuable, have practical meaning, help take care of eye health. Not only screening, examining, and consulting on eye care for free, the team of doctors and nurses also give gifts and medicine to people”.
According to Chairman of the Association of the Elderly in Giao Long Commune, Ta Van Chau, most people aged 50 and over have eye problems. Therefore, when a group of doctors and nurses came to screen people, people were excited. Most of the elderly members in the area have eye problems but have economic difficulties and limited mobility, so when there are volunteer organizations reaching out to the community, people actively participate. Through communication work on the commune radio station, more people came to register for screening than expected.
Mr. Ta Van Chau excitedly said: “The free eye examination and screening program is a meaningful activity, showing concern for the elderly. This is valuable and very appreciated. If possible, Tinh Anh Eye Center System will continue to maintain community activities to help local people.”
According to the plan, from now until June 30, 2023, the Tinh Anh Eye Center System will screen about 4,000 people in Chau Thanh district. The cost of the activity is estimated at over 400 million VND sponsored by the center system. The program will carry out the examination and screening process for cataracts and eye diseases related to the activities: vision testing, intraocular pressure measurement, eye examination with a biomicroscope to screen for eye diseases, treatment consultation and receiving eye care gifts.
Benefits of screening
In the elderly, the eyes are the most affected part. These include blurred vision, blurred vision, dry eyes, distorted vision, impaired vision, and even blindness.
According to the Ministry of Health , Vietnam currently has about 2 million people who are blind or have poor eyesight. Eye diseases are becoming more and more complicated. In particular, cataracts and refractive errors in children are the leading causes of blindness today.
According to statistics, 74% of people over 50 years old are likely to have cataracts. There are about 2.4 million people with cataracts who need early surgery to avoid blindness. For the elderly, there are many eye diseases that can occur. It is important to go to the doctor for early treatment and proper care.
Dr. Nguyen Si Hung - Director of Tinh Anh Eye Center said: Screening for eye diseases is extremely important and necessary, especially for the elderly. Early detection and timely treatment will help patients avoid the risk of blindness, help achieve the best vision and recover quickly.
According to experts, to prevent eye diseases, the elderly need to pay attention to a reasonable diet. Especially eat lots of fruits and vegetables, avoid foods containing animal fat. Take vitamins A, C, E and antioxidants to supplement nutrients, increase resistance for the eyes. Exercise regularly every day, relax the mind. Do eye blinking exercises continuously for about 1 minute before going to bed to rebalance eye reflexes combined with gently massaging the eye area to help the eyes relax.
In addition, when outdoors during the day, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. Elderly people should have their eyes checked at least once every 2 years. This can help identify the risk of eye diseases.
Following the policy of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Elderly Association on eye care for the elderly and with the permission of the Department of Health , the Provincial Elderly Association Representative Board coordinated with the Tinh Anh Eye Center System to implement the program "Bright eyes for the elderly". Participating in the program, the elderly are screened, consulted for free treatment of eye diseases and receive eye care gifts. Implementing the program, before that, nearly 3 thousand elderly people in Ben Tre city were screened, examined, and provided free eye care consultation by the team of doctors and physicians of Tinh Anh Eye Center System. Through screening, 198 patients were detected and consulted for treatment of diseases such as: Cataract, diabetic retinopathy, pterygium, etc. |
