Strengthening medical cooperation between Vietnam and Cuba

During the working trip to Cuba from May 17 to 22, the Vietnamese Ministry of Health delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen, met with First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez.

Deputy Minister of Health Do Xuan Tuyen reported on the results achieved during the working session with the Cuban Ministry of Health , notably identifying important cooperation opportunities for Vietnam such as developing and implementing the family doctor model, eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS, etc. The Deputy Minister also announced the establishment of a joint venture to research and produce pharmaceuticals in Vietnam.

Comrade Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez assessed the establishment of the joint venture as an important milestone in the business and trade relations between the two countries; said that the formalization of the Cuba-Vietnam high-tech joint venture in the field of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals will bring mutual benefits and produce important medicines for both the Vietnamese and Cuban people.

Immediately after the meeting, witnessed by the President of the Republic of Cuba and Deputy Minister Do Xuan Tuyen, representatives of BioCubaFarma SA Pharmaceutical Company and Vietnamese companies signed a Cooperation Agreement in the pharmaceutical sector.

Accordingly, the parties will establish and, through a joint venture in Vietnam, build a pharmaceutical factory in Vietnam, receive technology transfer of biological and pharmaceutical products from Cuba, and promote research and development activities on biological products and high-tech drugs in Vietnam.

At the same time, the joint venture also promotes the import and distribution of Cuban pharmaceuticals suitable for the needs of the Vietnamese market. At the signing ceremony, Deputy Minister Do Xuan Tuyen said that the project received strong support from the two governments, and is especially meaningful when it is officially signed in 2025, marking the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
