Research shows that omega-3 fish oil can help lower triglycerides, support healthy blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and benefit mood and brain function.
However, omega-3s can interact with some commonly used medications. So if you take omega-3 fish oil, it is important to know which medications may interact with them and discuss them with your doctor.
Here are three common medications that may interact with omega-3 fish oil.

Blood pressure medication
Depending on the dosage, taking omega-3 fish oil along with blood pressure medication can cause blood pressure to drop too low. Joseph Mercola, DO, a family medicine physician, explains that doses of 2,000 to 3,000 mg of omega-3s per day (equivalent to two to three capsules, the usual dose is just one capsule) can lower blood pressure slightly. Therefore, when combining medications, dosage adjustments may be needed, according to the health news site Eating Well.
This is because omega-3 fatty acids dilate blood vessels and help lower blood pressure. When combined with blood pressure lowering drugs, they can cause an abnormally sharp drop in blood pressure.
Common pain relievers
Combining high doses of omega-3 fish oil with common pain relievers like ibuprofen and common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like naproxen, can cause problems. So if you take omega-3 fish oil every day and regularly use NSAIDs, talk to your doctor to make sure it's safe.
Anticoagulants
Medications like warfarin (Coumadin), Eliquis, and Xarelto reduce the risk of blood clots, says registered dietitian Jennifer Hanes of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Since omega-3 fatty acids are natural blood thinners, taking the two together can increase the blood-thinning effect, leading to easier bleeding, especially from injury or surgery.
However, experts note that drug interactions like the ones mentioned above don't mean you have to stop taking omega-3 fish oil. Instead, talk to your doctor to be safe, according to Eating Well.
