Giving gifts to fishermen before the first sea trip of the year

On February 18, a working delegation of departments, branches and units in Kien Giang province visited, presented gifts and encouraged fishermen before their fishing trips at the beginning of the year of the Dragon 2024.

The delegation visited and presented gifts to fishermen on fishing boats (including life jackets and life buoys), wishing them a smooth trip to sea; and at the same time, sent out a call to fight against IUU fishing violations.

Working delegation of departments, branches and units in Kien Giang province visited and gave gifts to fishermen on fishing boats.

Mr. Bui Minh Hiep (residing in Rach Gia City), captain of a fishing boat specializing in fishing in the waters of Phu Quoc, said that each trip has 20-25 fishermen on a pair of boats, usually going for more than 20 days. "I hope business goes smoothly, the crew catches a lot so that the people on the boat can have money to support their families," Mr. Hiep expressed.

On the same day, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kien Giang organized a meeting and presented gifts to fishermen and ship owners who went offshore to exploit seafood at Tac Cau Fishing Port. Thereby, encouraging the spirit of the people determined to improve productivity, quality, and seafood products, both participating in production and protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands.

On the occasion of the first meeting of the year, the authorities of Kien Giang province called on fishermen, especially ship owners, owners of fishing, purchasing and processing enterprises, captains and fishermen to remind each other and actively respond to the call of the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial People's Committee to exploit seafood in accordance with the law; not to harm resources, not to send fishing boats and fishermen to illegally exploit seafood in foreign waters, affecting the interests, prestige and honor of the nation and people.

Mr. Le Huu Toan, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kien Giang, said that Kien Giang is one of the provinces with key fishing grounds in the country, the fishing industry has developed strongly for a long time, creating direct jobs for more than 70,000 workers in the fishing industry, contributing to the economic development of fishermen, making an important contribution to the economic development of the province. In 2023, the fishing and aquaculture industry will contribute more than 800,000 tons, accounting for about 10% of the country's output. Thereby, the economic value contributes more than 33,000 billion VND, accounting for more than 33% of the proportion of the province's agricultural, forestry and fishery value.
