Ca Mau has the advantage of a large sea area, a rich reserve of aquatic products in terms of species, along with a fleet of offshore fishing vessels increasingly invested in modern equipment, ensuring long-term offshore fishing. Accordingly, fishing is a very important field, accounting for about 43% of the total aquatic product output and more than 40% of the province's export turnover. Mr. Do Chi Si, Head of the Department of Fisheries, Livestock and Veterinary Medicine, said that the whole province currently has 4,440 fishing vessels with a total capacity of 667,314 KW, of which 1,551 vessels are over 15 m long and are installed with VMS fishing vessel monitoring equipment, with an annual output of about 237,000 tons, including 10,000 tons of shrimp.

In addition to exploitation, Ca Mau sea area is very suitable for developing coastal aquaculture such as: raising cobia, grouper, yellowfin pomfret... bringing high economic value. In addition to fish farming, many fishermen in coastal districts such as: Nam Can, Ngoc Hien, Phu Tan, Dam Doi also strongly develop the profession of raising clams and oysters in cages.
To increase the value of fishing, contributing to increasing the ability to stay at sea for long periods of time for offshore fishing vessels, fishing logistics services are increasingly developing, these fleets ensure the supply, supply of goods and purchase of aquatic products for offshore fishing vessels. The operation of fishing logistics service vessels helps reduce costs and time for fishing vessels when entering and leaving the shore. Mr. Si informed: “In recent years, the field of fishing exploitation has been strongly invested in and developed. Fishing ports, fishing wharves, and storm shelters have been effective, ensuring the safety of boats and fishermen entering and leaving safely, helping fishermen feel secure at sea, maintaining national sovereignty over maritime borders”.

According to Mr. Si, in order to develop sustainable fisheries exploitation, in recent times, Ca Mau has implemented many synchronous solutions, focusing on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. In particular, implementing Directive 17 on combating destructive fishing; regenerating aquatic resources, promoting the conversion of fishing practices that damage resources and moving towards ending practices that damage aquatic resources and affect the ecological environment; at the same time, strengthening the conservation and protection of aquatic resources, implementing many projects and models aimed at protecting and regenerating aquatic resources such as: releasing seeds to regenerate aquatic resources, releasing artificial reefs, establishing marine reserves, and aquatic resource protection areas.

With a coastline of 31 km, passing through Khanh Hoi and Khanh Tien communes, with a large fishing ground of over 20,000 km2, with great potential for marine economic development, in recent times, U Minh district has focused resources on investing in infrastructure, promoting sustainable marine economic development. Mr. Le Hong Thinh, Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee, said that the district currently has 1,070 means of exploiting and catching aquatic products at sea with 4,231 crew members, including 502 vessels under 12 m, 328 vessels from 12 to under 15 m, 234 vessels over 15 m (all have installed voyage monitoring equipment). The total output of aquatic products exploited from the beginning of the year to date is 24,497 tons, reaching 32% of the plan.
“Along with that, the project to upgrade and expand the U Minh - Khanh Hoi route is under construction. When this project is completed, along with the existing infrastructure, it will complete the technical infrastructure and services, creating favorable conditions for people to travel and trade, especially people in coastal residential areas in the district, creating space and a new step of development for the district's marine economy,” said Mr. Le Hong Thinh.
Fisherman Tran Van Ut, Hamlet 4, Khanh Lam Commune, U Minh District, excitedly said: “This year, the weather is relatively favorable, so fishermen's exploitation is more effective. Besides, all levels and sectors are paying attention to drastically combating destructive fishing, so fisheries are gradually recovering. Since then, people's exploitation and fishing have been effective.”
In addition to aquaculture and mineral exploration, renewable energy development is also a bright spot in the province's industrial sector. To date, the province has 16 wind power projects approved in the planning with a total capacity of 1,000 MW. Of these, 14 projects have been approved for investment with a total capacity of 800 MW, of which 170 MW have been put into commercial operation; 2 projects with a total capacity of 200 MW have been proposed by investors, the Provincial People's Committee is seeking opinions from relevant ministries and branches as a basis for approving investment policies according to regulations.
Recently, the Prime Minister directed the Ministry of National Defense to urgently invest in the expressway from Ca Mau to Dat Mui and from Dat Mui to Hon Khoai Port to develop a synchronous logistics infrastructure system in the southernmost region of the country and the Mekong Delta.
Developing the marine economy is not only the aspiration of fishermen who have been attached to the sea for generations, but also the goal of the Party, government and people to find a direction for sustainable exploitation and development in the future./.
