Rear Admiral John Mauger, Commander of the US Coast Guard No. 1, said earlier that a robotic diving vehicle deployed from a Canadian ship discovered the first debris of the Titan submersible late in the morning of June 22 (local time, the same night Vietnam time) on the seabed about 488 meters from the bow of the Titanic, at a depth of about 4 kilometers, in a remote area of the North Atlantic.
A total of five major pieces of the 6.7-meter-long Titan submersible have been found, including the ship's stern cone and two parts of the hull.
“The debris here is consistent with a catastrophic explosion of the submersible,” Mauger said, without saying whether any bodies had been found.
Just before the Coast Guard press conference, OceanGate Expeditions issued a statement saying there were no survivors among the five men aboard the Titan, including the company's founder and CEO Stockton Rush, who was also the captain of the submersible.
The other four are British billionaire and explorer Hamish Harding, 58; Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his 19-year-old son, Suleman, both British citizens; and French oceanographer and renowned Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who has visited the wreck dozens of times.
Rescue teams from several countries spent days scouring thousands of square kilometres of ocean using planes and ships to search for any sign of Titan.
Also at the press conference, this multinational search was declared over.
