Ten Hag has been unemployed since being sacked by Manchester United last October. His former club Ajax have also recently approached him about coaching.

However, in the end, the Dutch coach chose Bayer Leverkusen as his new destination.

Erik ten Hag has signed a two-year contract with the German side, replacing Xabi Alonso - who has enjoyed huge success over the past three seasons.

During the signing ceremony with Leverkusen, Ten Hag said: " Bayer 04 is one of the best clubs in Germany and also a top team in Europe.

The club offers great conditions. I was very impressed after discussions with the management.

I came to Leverkusen to continue my coaching ambitions. It is an exciting challenge to achieve great things at an ambitious club."

Leverkusen CEO Simon Rolfes said: " With Ten Hag, we have an experienced coach with many achievements on the pitch.

Erik also proved his quality when he won two cups with MU in the difficult circumstances of this club."
