Ten Hag blames referee after defeat

VnExpressVnExpress04/05/2023

According to coach Erik ten Hag, referee Andre Marriner repeatedly overlooked dangerous fouls by Brighton on Man Utd players.

In the 94th minute, the referee blew the whistle for defender Luke Shaw after he fouled Julio Enciso. Shaw reacted strongly and received a yellow card. Brighton's penalty led to a corner kick for the home team, and from there Shaw jumped up and used his hand to play the ball, causing Man Utd to be awarded a penalty. Both Ten Hag and Shaw said the referee made a mistake in blowing the whistle for the English defender. "If it hadn't been for that penalty, Brighton wouldn't have scored," Shaw told BT Sport . "But the penalty was a stupid mistake on my part, and I don't know why I put my hand in that position."

Coach Ten Hag also said that Man Utd were unlucky with this defeat. "I was angry about that penalty," he said. "Brighton also committed many fouls without the referee blowing the whistle. I spoke to the referees, when Marcus Rashford and Antony were fouled dangerously many times. I do not support the reaction of the players, but it is difficult to stay calm after such obvious mistakes."

In the 62nd minute, Ten Hag said something loudly to the referee, something that rarely happens to the 53-year-old coach. Referee Marriner had given Casemiro a direct red card, sending him off in the match against Crystal Palace on February 4, 2023. When Casemiro received his second direct red card on March 12, 2023 against Southampton, Marriner worked as a VAR and advised the main referee to send off the Brazilian midfielder.

Brighton scored the only goal of the game from a last-minute penalty, with midfielder Alexis Mac Allisters scoring decisively from the 11m mark. This defeat has left Man Utd uncertain about their Champions League race next season, but coach Ten Hag does not think so. "We still have the right to decide, and the important thing is that the team recovers quickly in the next match at West Ham," added the Dutch coach.

Man Utd will face West Ham at the Olympic Stadium in London on Sunday night, May 7. They need 11 points from their remaining 15 matches to ensure their right to decide on a place in the Top 4. The remaining schedule for the "Red Devils" is not too difficult when the next five opponents are all outside the Top 9 of the Premier League.
