Binh Thuan Province: Proposal to expand official export market for dragon fruit. Chinese market "buys" strongly, dragon fruit price reaches 42,000 VND/kg |
Dragon fruit is identified as an advantage and specialty of Binh Thuan province, dragon fruit production plays an important role in the development of the province's agricultural and rural economy . With more than 30 thousand farming households participating in the production, purchase, and preliminary processing of dragon fruit for export, it creates regular jobs for 70 - 80 thousand workers every year. The total area of dragon fruit is currently about 27,649 hectares, down 15.8% over the same period last year.
Which markets are Binh Thuan dragon fruits exported to? |
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Thuan, since before the Lunar New Year until now, China has reopened, so traders have stepped up dragon fruit purchasing activities, pushing the price of dragon fruit (white flesh) up and stabilizing from 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg.
However, the amount of dragon fruit is not much. The output in the first quarter of 2023 is about 173,000 tons. The reason is that due to the unstable price situation that has been going on for a long time, many farmers do not take care of and do not use lights to stimulate dragon fruit to bear fruit.
Red-skinned, white-fleshed dragon fruit is the variety grown in Binh Thuan, occupying about 80% of the area. The remaining area is red-skinned, red-fleshed, purple-pink dragon fruit. In addition, there is now a yellow-skinned, white-fleshed dragon fruit variety.
Regarding product output, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Thuan said that Binh Thuan dragon fruit is mainly consumed domestically (15% of output) and exported (85% of output). The main export markets are Asia (China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Philippines, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Qatar, India, United Arab Emirates - UAE); European countries (Germany, Netherlands, Russia, Spain); America (Canada, USA), Oceania (Australia, New Zealand).
China is the main export market for Binh Thuan dragon fruit. Of which, about 2-3% is official, the rest is traded through border trade through the Chinese market or in association with businesses outside the province for direct export.
Regarding official exports to the Chinese market, in 2022, more than 6,606 tons were exported with a turnover of 7.72 million USD. In the first quarter of 2023 alone, the dragon fruit export output was 1,150 tons with an export turnover of 1.8 million USD, reaching 20.93% of the 2023 plan, down 13.17% over the same period last year.
About 70 - 80% of Binh Thuan dragon fruit output is consumed in the form of small-scale exports. It is mainly purchased by businesses, establishments, and business households and transported to northern border gates such as: Tan Thanh (Lang Son) - Po Chai (Guangxi, China), Kim Thanh (Lao Cai) - Ha Khau (Yunnan, China), Thanh Thuy (Ha Giang) - Thien Bao (Yunnan, China); Mong Cai (Quang Ninh) - Dong Hung (Guangxi, China) for consumption through the Chinese market.
Also according to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Thuan, currently, dragon fruit production and consumption cooperatives are gradually finding markets to partially solve the output for the product.
Specifically, Thuan Tien Dragon Fruit Cooperative has stable links with domestic enterprises to consume dragon fruit exported to Europe 100 tons/year with a stable average price of 26,000 VND/kg.
Hoa Le Clean Dragon Fruit Cooperative cooperates with Vinh Cuu Green Company Limited to export to the US market with an output of 120 tons/month; cooperates with Giasaka Japan Company Limited to export to the Japanese market with an output of about 30 tons/month.
In addition to consuming fresh products, businesses have now processed products from dragon fruit. Specifically, dried dragon fruit, juice, wine, candy, syrup, etc. are mostly consumed domestically with a processing capacity of about 182,000 tons/year, accounting for about 26% of total output.
In order to find a stable outlet for dragon fruit, Binh Thuan province also recommended that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and relevant ministries promptly update new information on import regulations and policies from China as well as changes in the goods inspection mechanism so that businesses can promptly grasp and proactively plan their production and business activities.
Support the province in promoting trade and export of dragon fruit through official channels, especially the Chinese market at present.
Support and invite large corporations to invest in the production and processing of fresh dragon fruit products to serve as a "locomotive" to lead, orient and develop the market for consuming the region's advantageous agricultural products.
Support the province to participate in projects to have resources to develop and enhance the value chain for the dragon fruit industry in a modern and synchronous direction from production to consumption.
