Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan appeared in a YouTube video posted on the morning of November 21, announcing the new film and launching a search for actors.
June 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of the first The Karate Kid film, which starred Macchio as a California high school student who learns to fight and act with restraint after being bullied by a group of bullies.
Macchio continued to appear in The Karate Kid Part II in 1986 and The Karate Kid Part III in 1989. The fourth installment The Next Karate Kid was released five years later, starring Hilary Swank.
Jackie Chan stars in The Karate Kid (2010) with Jaden Smith
In 2010, Jackie Chan starred in The Karate Kid with Jaden Smith (as Dre Parker), but the Cobra Kai series really took off, debuting in 2018. In just its first week of release, The Karate Kid (2010) topped the North American box office with a revenue of up to 56 million USD after 3 days of showing. Meanwhile, the film cost only 40 million USD. The child actor in the film is the 12-year-old son Jaden of American actor Will Smith.
The Emmy-nominated series Cobra Kai has become wildly popular on Netflix, with its fifth season ending last year.
The latest installment of The Karate Kid is scheduled to hit theaters on December 13, 2024.
